Should I worry about my dog's purple scrotum or testicle placement?

If what you're seeing looks like a symmetrical swelling near the base of his penis in front of the scrotum, what you see is likely the *bulbus glandis*. This structure is a normal part of the male dog's anatomy. The *bulbus glandis* swells during [mating](https://www.petcoach.co/article/anatomy-and-function-of-the-reproductive-system-in-dogs) which causes the dogs to tie or 'lock' together during the act. It may swell when the dog is excited, even in a neutered dog.

Everything in the picture appears normal. the dark spot appears to be normal pigment in the skin of he scrotum. The skin can get more or less pigmented as they age, so this may be why you are just now noticing this. As long as the dark areas are not raised, crusty, or causing any other problems with the skin, then they are not concerning. Considering he is otherwise normal, I would not be concerned about this. Some dogs can have slightly purplish balls and it can be normal, but if they are very purple, it's not normal and it might be a sign of testicular torsion. in that case i would recommend to bring him to the vet ASAP.

It may also occur with an erection when a dog is overstimulated or happy. The swelling will go down as the dog calms.

This really looks like it is most likely a harmless pigmented area. At this age pets get different colored spots on their skin because he is going through his maturation process. If it isn’t raised, swollen or has hair loss, then it is likely nothing to worry about and is just pigmentation. I would still mention it to your vet so they can look at it to verify. This warrants a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible as this is likely causing him severe discomfort. They would be able to check this more closely and recommend therapy accordingly. The picture does not show anything concerning but I would continue to monitor for any sweliing or discomfort which may indicate a painful infection or assymetry which can indicate a tumour. Rapid increase in size can occur with scrotal hernias which although rare are a surgical emergency.
