When should I take my dog and her new puppies to the vet after birth?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You don't need to take her to the vet right away, however there are a few things you should watch for and do. 1. Feed a high quality canned puppy food, she needs the energy and water 2. Watch for any face rubbing, twitching, seizures- these are signs of low calcium and this is a life-threatening condition, if any of this occurs get her to a vet right away. 3. Make sure the puppies are all suckling, and make sure Lila is licking them and cleaning them up. 4. Keep their enclosure clean and dry 5. Try to handle the puppies as little as possible and let Lila do her thing, instincts should take over 6. Call your vet about getting a dewormer for Lila. Also discuss her vaccine status 7. Keep any other dogs away, the puppies are at risk of getting viruses and infections. 8. You will need to have the puppies dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age, so make an appointment for then with your vet. 9. Weigh the puppies twice a day on a small gram scale. They should continue to gain weight, if they aren't, call your vet. Best of luck with your little ones, have fun!

If you baught the puppy then your first visit to a veterinarian should be now to make sure the puppy is healthy. Your veterinarian will then tell you when to brin Luna back for her first, second, third and fourth course of vaccinations and for deworming.

She should have an examine as soon as possible once she is brought home. Take a stool sample so your vet can test for parasites since intestinal parasites are common in puppies. As for vaccines, the schedule will depend on if she has already had some vaccines, your location, and her lifestyle. Your vet can develop a vaccine plan once he/she has all that information. Deworming puppies is recommended with pyrantel at 2, 4 and 6 weeks. This can be purchased at any pet store. Vaccines are started at 6 weeks that incude distemper and parvo. Bordetella is not started to 8 weeks and is optional

So cute! If he seems healthy and is not having any problems then he could wait until he is 8 weeks old for a vet visit. I probably would not vaccinate him at his age and weight. You should limit his exposure to other dogs and do not take him to any public places until he is vaccinated. You could take a stool sample to your vet and have him/her test it for parasites and/or get a broad spectrum dewormer from your vet and give him a dose, especially if he hasn't already been dewormed by the breeder. That depends....If she is in labor and puppies are already born then hopefully she can give birth to the last puppies as well. Usually there should be 30-45 minutes between puppies. If she stopped having contractions before all were born, or if she has been trying to give birth to a puppy but it appears that is cannot come easily, ie it may block the birth canal, then I suggest you take mama and puppies to a vet for assistance. If it looks like she does not have any problems, you do not need to involve a vet, and just let her have her babies until she is done.
