My dog's vulva skin is dark after heat bleeding stopped. Is it normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 5.1 lbs

Hi my dog is in her heat. She has stopped bleeding for a few days now. I noticed her vulva is a little dark on the skin, when you look from behind. It's not the fur but the skin near the tip. What's that?

She is going out of heat and you will Roxie the swelling start to decrease. If there is no mucous vaginal discharge and she is acting normally, then I would not worry about the skin changing colors. There is not a known condition that causes this, but it is normal and usually will turn back with time. You may notice this happen on her belly too and it does not have to be related to a heat cycle
