Can my dog get pregnant if she wasn't in heat? What are symptoms?

If she is in heat and has been potentially left alone with intact male dogs, there is always a chance she may be pregnant. The only way to prevent her from becoming pregnant 100% is to have her spayed, especially if you do not wish to have puppies. It appears that she has grass stains on her, which may have been from her getting out, or just playing in your yard. If she is acting ill, it is best to seek veterinary care to try and determine the cause and treat any injuries she may have gotten. If you suspect she may already be pregnant, taking her to the vet to confirm it is also best.

This is a possibility, there is no way to know at the moment, if you start seeing some pregnancy sign in about a month from now (enlarged nipples, weight gain, increase appetite),- take her to the vet in order to do an ultrasound, this will confirm or rule out pregnancy.

She may be having a false pregnancy. If she had contact with a male while she was in heat, she could be pregnant. She could also have a hormonal problem or a mammary tumor. It would be best to take her to a veterinarian for an exam. The vet can also tell you whether she is pregnant. Unfortunately this is impossible without a hands-on exam.

There is always a possibility if the two were tied and both are not fixed. If you suspect your dog may be pregnant, bringing her into the vet to confirm the pregnancy is best. Having your dog spayed is also a good idea if you don't wish to have puppies.

Hello, sorry to hear about Marley. Yes indeed she can. Male dogs may ejaculate soon after penetration leading to pregnancy. However, for full delivery of their ejaculate, dogs require bonding that may last longer. And thus, although the chances that Marley may be pregnant are existing, they are not as high as if the dogs had bonded. Hope this helps and best of luck. It could be that Lanzo is still in heat, as it would be too early for signs of pregnancy if she just had her first heat. Vulva and nipple swelling are also signs of heat, and it does take time for them to go down after a dog ends her heat. I would have her seen by a vet in three weeks for a blood test called relaxin. This is a hormone produced when a dog is pregnant. While it isn't advisable for a dog to get pregnant on her first heat, it does happen and as long as you work with your vet during her pregnancy, she can be ok.
