My dog in heat had a male dog on her briefly. Could she be pregnant?

Hello. It is tough to tell without an x-ray or ultrasound exam. It is very possible that the male still had viable sperm in his reproductive tract ( sperm can remain viable for 3-4 weeks in the accessory sex glands of a recently neutered male ). It is very unlikely they mated in that time frame if the male was not still tied (mounting) the female when you came back in the house. If you do not want them breeding then I would definitely have them spayed/neutered though because it is bound to happen soon. Good luck with your pups! Love the name Olive!

I recommend you have Molly seen by your vet to make sure she is okay. Dogs usually go into heat around 6 months of age, but can also go into heat earlier, and often the first heat is not noticeable, as there is not always a lot of visible discharge. She may be pregnant, so speak to your vet about what your options are regarding that as well, and if you want to keep the puppies to term. A recently neutered male dog may potentially impregnate a receptive female for as long as one month after surgery. Sperm is produced in the testicles then mixes with seminal fluid in the prostate. It is possible for those sperm to survive for as long as a month after the testes, which replenish the supply, are removed. Additionally, testosterone levels are still high in the male and he will want mate with a receptive female until those levels decline.

It is quite possible she is in pup - males can be fertile for 4-6weeks after castration so if they were not separated, or other males would have had access to her when she was in heat she may well be in pregnant. I recommend you schedule an ultrasound exam with your vet to confirm pregnancy and guide appropriate management. You will need to arrange a separate area for her and pups away from other dogs for at least 6weeks if she is rearing pups

It all depends on whether the male dog ejaculated or not. You can run a pregnancy test and/or an ultrasound at 28 days or have an X-ray done at day 50. Write down the date when they mated. Dogs are pregnant for 60-63 days. I hope this helps!
