The action of eating will actually send signals to the bowels to start moving things out, so they will often feel like going right after a meal. If you are just letting him into a yard, then it's good to let him out for a few minutes right after a meal. If you're taking him for a walk, then better to wait about 30 minutes to let the stomach settle.

How long a dog can hold his urine and bowel movements depends on their age. Puppies need to go out more often. Until house trained I recommend not waiting longer than 15-20 mins after the puppy eats to take them out. The older the dog gets the longer they can go. Adult dogs get on a schedule and can hold their urine and stool for 6 hours or more. Transit time also isn't as quick, so there may not be an immediate need to go right after they eat. For my adult dog, he goes out first thing in the morning and is then fed his breakfast and is let out a few hours later before we leave for work. At night he eats dinner and then is let out again right before bed.

Some dogs have their own schedules and they are pretty stubborn about it! You could try going on a long walk 30 minutes after eating, sometimes that will stimulate the bowels. But otherwise, he probably just needs some more time to adjust. Make sure when you take him out in the middle of the night, that it is "boring" for Walter. Let him out, then take him back to bed. No talking or playing or treats.

Great question! Yes, it does matter when you feed him as feeding him too soon after exercise can lead to bloat (a fatal condition), while walking him too soon after eating can also lead to bloat. I would recommend walking him, and then waiting to feed him for at least 30 minutes to an hour. If you wanted to feed him first, you will need to wait at least an hour before walking him. It's find to feed Bowie small treats when training him, just make sure to take him outside within 15 minutes after finishing the training session to encourage him to potty. This will fit in with his potty training, as he should be taken out very soon after eating.

About 30 minutes after eating, Black should go outside to potty, so don't feed him right before heading out the door for work. No need for a specific time!
