My dog poops too quickly after eating new healthy weight food. Normal?

Thank you for your questions about Koda. I would not say that is normal and I suspect it may be a sign that he does not tolerate the new diet as well. The jury is still out on grain free food, some pets do well on it and other ones develop heart conditions and constipation issues. Most vets generally do not recommend them. I do advise changing the diet again. If you are looking for a nice food, I recommend a brand called Royal Canin. It is generally very easy to digest and most pets who eat this diet have nice coats, good stool quality and low stool quantity (a sign that the diet does not contain many fillers). Change the diet slowly over about a weeks time. If the diarrhea continues, have the stool checked for parasites as this can also cause changes to the stool. I hope you found this helpful. No he's perfect. We are getting used to many dogs and cats being fat. His coat is shiny, he has a good waist and there is plenty of muscle over his spine. It does sound like he poops more than normal. I would try a higher calorie food. There may be excessive fiber in the food you are feeding causing that much poop. Gradually mix the new food with the old one over a week or so to prevent stomach upset. I'm pleased to see such a fit, active dog. Four to five times per day is likely abnormal meaning this particular diet is not agreeing with him. In addition, grain free diets are high in carbohydrates and can lead to weight gain. I would gradually transition him to a new formula over the course of seven days. Then keep track of his bowel movements to see if you are making progress. You can consider a large breed formula or one labeled for sensitive stomachs to start. If you are not making progress, then I would try a prescription low fat diet. I hope this information helps!

Lots of food means lots of poop. Since his feces appear to be normal the frequency likely is caused by the amount of food. Once you are at the point where you feed a normal amount of food to maintain his weight, the frequency should get less.

This is likely due to a higher fiber content in the newer food. Defecating this much will not cause any problems but if you would like to reduce the frequency at which Daphne is going to the bathroom, I would recommend switching to a different food such as Science Diet and see if this helps. Rich foods or new foods have the potential to trigger diarrhea in sensitive dogs. I recommend feeding white rice and scrambled eggs until the stool is normal. Rice can regulate intestinal motility, and the eggs are easily digestible. Adding a probiotic is a good idea, and this can be added to the rice and eggs. Once the stool is normal you can start adding Alpine's regular kibble back in.
