Why does my dog poop twice, first solid then runny? Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 85 lbs

When Wallace goes #2, he usually goes twice. Once when I get home and it’s solid. Then again maybe 20 minutes later on our walk and that’s runny. He acts normal and everything and it’s been like this forever. It that normal? Any suggestions?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that this is related to his diet and is dietary indiscretion. I would recommend switching to a different brand / formula of food and also consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. If this continues despite a change in diet and the addition of a probiotic, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Wallace so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not necessarily uncommon and sometimes we see this being transient. In this case, it will get better on its own. If it does not get better and becomes diarrhea entirely, then things like colitis for example would have to be considered. For this reason, I recommend that you monitor him for now. If no improvement is seen or it becomes diarrhea, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

Even though Wally’s food hasn’t changed it could be that he would do better with a different diet. Parasites would be another possibility. If this continues or if the diarrhea gets worse I’d recommend having him examined by your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. My dog poops multiple times on walks, and it gets soft. Is it normal?

Hello. Probably not. Exercise can & will facilitate bowel movements, & the faster stool moves through the bowels, the less water is absorbed making the stools a little softer. This may be just normal for your pup. If anything changes, of course discuss this with your veterinarian, but if everything else is OK, I would not be too worried. My 6-month-old puppy's poop gets runny later. Is this normal?

I would recommend switching the diet that has more fiber and that might agree with her a bit better. If after switching the diet and treats, she is still having problems with her poop, I would recommend bringing a poop sample to your veterinarian and have it tested for parasites. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns. Also, be sure to check and see if she is eating any plants or other abnormal things intermittently that may be causing the diarrhea.

Why is my dog having frequent small, soft poops but acting normal?

When dogs are frequently straining to poop, this can indicate irritation within the large bowel of the intestines - this is called tenesmus (or straining). Why is my dog's poop hard then yellow and runny after a few seconds?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Hard poop can be secondary to constipation, so I would add a little more fiber to Teddy's diet if you haven't already. Plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) works very well or green beans and carrots. The runny poop could be caused by a parasitic infection or bacterial infection.
