My dog has pink eye. Is Doxycycline safe for its liver/kidneys?

If there is an indication for the doxycycline, as it sounds like your vet suspects there is--meaning your vet suspects that there is a bacterial infection that may respond to doxycycline-- then it is appropriate. Ideally, a more definitive diagnosis would be reached. Has Casper had an abdominal ultrasound? Is he showing symptoms of illness and that is why your vet ran the bloodwork in the first place? I presume that Casper has a history of elevated liver values since he has been on Denamarin. It may be beneficial to consider a consultation with an internal medicine specialist. Unfortunately, no, doxycycline is not a good choice for antibiotics in a nursing mamma dog. First, it does not have the spectrum of antibacterial activity needed for most mammary gland infections. This means that it may not clear up the infection entirely or be effective against the organisms causing the infection at all. Secondly, this is a drug that needs to be avoided in nursing moms because of potential side effects it can have in young puppies. This drug is not safe in neonates and can cause problems with the teeth in these young pups. I would recommend taking your momma dog to the vet to be examined and to get an antibiotic that is safe for her and the pups. In the meantime, until you can get to the vet, try using warm compresses and massage on the affected glands if your dog will tolerate it. I hope this helps. I'm not sure why you keep posting the same photo with different information. If you give a short course of medications there should be no issues with damage to the liver or kidneys. All you can do is give the medication as directed and have the kidney and liver enzymes checked periodically by your vet to make sure there is no damage being done. It is very rare for damage to occur from these medications even though it is possible for it to happen. This photo does not show any infection. The color change to the lips appears to be vitiligo. If there is an infection it is not evident by the photos. Please follow your vet's instructions as they are the one that have examined your dog in person.

The eye is quite badly damaged and I would not expect it to return to normal. Chlamydia psittaci is an infection that can cause eye disease, but I would expect that the other eye or nose would be affected as well if this was the primary problem. My suspicion is that the eye was damaged by something. This often happens when they bump it into something or are fighting. The doxycycline is OK at that dose and rate. I would give this for only five days. You can help keep the eye from getting infected and help it heal by getting a good medicated eye drop from the pharmacy. A broad spectrum antibiotic/antifungal/antiinflammatory would be best. It's best to apply it to the eye six times a day, or as much as you can. Give this until the outside of the eye does not look red and swollen. Also, gently wipe away the crusts around the eye with warm water once a day. The eye will continue to have changes and will probably look worse and more sunken as time goes on, but they can adapt to this condition. If you are able to bring the bird to a veterinarian, they can offer other treatment options. I hope that helps and the bird gets better soon.

Hi there. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is a very safe antibiotic and is not very hard on the kidneys and liver. It can cause gastric upset if given on an empty stomach, so I would recommend just giving with some food. If you see changes in urination or drinking habits you can have him checked out for his kidneys, but this medication should be fine for Danny. I would only just check out how much Danny weighs. The normal dose for Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is 12.5mg/kg, so I would be giving 375mg every 12 hours to Danny assuming he weighs 30kg. Antibiotics have very large ranges in terms of dosing, and different countries will have slightly different formulations, so I would check this with your vet, as the dose may be higher with the specific compounding that your vet uses.

Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. This is a great question. Doxycycline falls into the category of antibiotics called tetracyclines. Other tetracyclines- namely oxytetracycline- are shown to disturb bone and teeth developement in fetal skeletons or in young growing animals. Doxycycline is MUCH less likely to do this than other tetracyclines. Even so, the formulary recommends considering the risks and benefits before prescribing. Though I don’t routinely give this to kittens (I prefer clavamox) I do often give it to puppies. I have not yet seen or heard of a case of abnormal bone developement with doxycycline in kittens or puppies - but it could theoretically happen. In my opinion, doxycycline is a great drug for upper respiratory infections in cats- especially in a shelter situation which may not have the labor, funding, or storage abilities of my suburban clinic. I also feel that - especially in a shelter situation - the benefits far outweigh the risks. I am far more worried about a kitten in a shelter dying from complications from a URI than I am about the minuscule chance of affecting bone development. Of course, if your shelter had plenty of liquid clavamox and people to administer it, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to switch the young ones to something like that. Hope this helped clarify some things!
