Do dog antibiotics harm liver or kidneys? What about pink lips?

Hi. I believe this question was answered yesterday, but maybe not. The antibiotics will not cause kidney or liver damage. Some chronic allergy and skin cases do need off and on antibiotics. Allergies can be very difficult and sometimes never be 100%. We try, but don't always get there. If you are getting frustrated then a veterinary dermatology referral would be indicated

Hi, German Sheperd are frequently getting antibiotics during the course of their life. If given judiciously antibiotics are unlikely to cause problems to their kidneys. With regards to the question about some dogs being able to live without any antibiotics in the world, yes I believe there are quite a few ! No German Shephards are not particularly prone to kidney disease. Your pet was never on an antibiotic according to this record. The Cetrizine is an anti-histamine, basically over the counter Zyrtec. The prednisolone is a steroid that usually affects the liver over time and can cause UTI's if used daily for more than 3-4 weeks at a time, not particularly kidney problems. The anti-fungal medication (Terbinafine) can affect the kidney but typically over if it is used over a very long period of time, such as weeks to months consecutively. So I would say that with the information you have provided, the risk of damage to Bruno's kidneys is pretty low to non-existent. I hope this helps! Best wishes and take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to see well in your picture but the color is lighter than normal. Sometimes if you stretch the lip up too tight it can look paler or whiter. If she is acting normal I am not sure I would read too much in to the color, especially f it more pink the rest of the day. If you are worried I would have her rechecked and ask the Vet to run a PCV/TS which measures her red blood cell count. Most dogs that are anemic are lethargic, weak, have a decreased appetite, and increased breathing. I wish you and MJ the best!

Ceohalexin once per day is not recommended. It needs to be given 2-3 times daily. That is likely why the infection keeps returning- it is probably never completely gone because the medication is not given correctly. A normal course of antibiotics is not likely to damage the liver or kidneys. You are making more of this possibility than you need to. That may happen 0.0001% of the time. I have never seen antibiotics, when used correctly, cause this problem in 25 years of my experience. Antibiotics are very useful drugs and needed in some cases like this. If you want a once a day antibiotic you can ask your vet for cefpodoxime. It is made for once daily dosing. He probably keeps getting these hot spots due to an underlying allergy. You can’t completely avoid this until you identify the underlying allergy. He needs allergy testing. You can try this topical medicated spray to see if it will help treat the spots. If this is a recurring skin issue, he most likely had an underlying allergy. It could be an allergy to environmental things, or an allergy to the protein in the food. You can treat the infection, but it will keep returning if the underlying issue isn't also addressed. I would talk with your veterinarian about allergies. The antibiotics are not too harsh, and won't cause kidney damage

If your dog had a healthy liver to begin with then the chances of the antibiotics or other medications causing liver damage is very minimal. If you are worried about the liver function your vet can run labs to check them. Easy to do and relatively inexpensive. Doxycycline can be used to treat eye disease but usually only if a pyogranulomatous or autoiummune disease is suspected. I typically use only topical eye medications to treat conjunctivitis but I guess it is possible that your vet thinks there may be more underlying going on than just conjunctivitis. I cannot play backseat driver as I don't have all the information. If you are worried about the treatment prescribed I suggest you speak to your vet and ask them to clarify.
