My pug has pigmentary keratitis. What temporary eye drops can I use?

I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with Scooter. Glaucoma is a horrible condition but it has to be diagnosed carefully. Usually it is suspected based on signs such as enlarged hard eyes, and then confirmed with a special pen that checks the pressure. It is really important with glaucoma to check the back of the eye with an ophthalmoacope to see if the retina is damaged. I would urge you not to try and treat this yourself. Number 1 it may not be glaucoma and you could do damage by giving the wrong meds or by omitting the correct ones. Number 2 if it is glaucoma treatment is multifaceted depending on severity. Even if funds are tight you need to find a way to get him to a vet for a proper examination. I hope you manage and in the mean time you could use lubricating eye gel to make the eyes slightly more comfortable.

Hello. Was the latanoprost scripted out by your vet? This medication is used in dogs with glaucoma, not KCS. Snoopy may also be hypersensitive to this medication, so if your vet has not diagnosed glaucoma, nor scripted the latanoprost to you, you should not be putting this in his eyes. Hello. It is always best to have your veterinarian examine any eye problem as soon as it is noticed. This can be an infection, irritation, or even the start of an autoimmune condition called Keratoconjunctivitis sicca. It may even be allergy driven. With the right treatment, the eyes can heal very quickly. The wrong or no treatment can let a simple problem blow up into a big one. So while I do use the Vetericyn ophthalmic products in certain conditions, if you have the means to have Sipsey actually examined, this would be the very best course of action. A thorough ocular exam is needed in these cases to define the problem. However, most common is pigmentary keratitis, or exposure keratitis. This is not usually reversing, However use of a steroid called dexamethasone can be somewhat helpful. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. In pugs, this is a normal thing to see. There is increased pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the eye. Pugs can develop pigmentary keratitis, in which a dark film develops over the eye itself. This does not cause any pain and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make this go away or slow down the progression. If the eye becomes irritated, you can use steroid drops. Something that a vet would need to prescribe Dexter after examining him. I hope this helps!
