My dog has eye pressure. Can I use OTC drops instead of a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | 30 lbs

I have no choice to give my dog over the counter TimololMaleate.5% Eye Drops That I'll will be purchasing tomorrow, I believe he has glaucoma It more for his eyes pressure it's better than nothing, I'm trying my best to figure out every solution to help him out, I don't have the funds to take him to the vet

I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with Scooter. Glaucoma is a horrible condition but it has to be diagnosed carefully. Usually it is suspected based on signs such as enlarged hard eyes, and then confirmed with a special pen that checks the pressure. It is really important with glaucoma to check the back of the eye with an ophthalmoacope to see if the retina is damaged. I would urge you not to try and treat this yourself. Number 1 it may not be glaucoma and you could do damage by giving the wrong meds or by omitting the correct ones. Number 2 if it is glaucoma treatment is multifaceted depending on severity.
Even if funds are tight you need to find a way to get him to a vet for a proper examination. I hope you manage and in the mean time you could use lubricating eye gel to make the eyes slightly more comfortable.

I'm so sorry to hear that Hunter is dealing with this. Glaucoma can be caused by a number of things and can sometimes be reversed before the blindness is permanent. I am attaching a handout with more information about glaucoma below.

If Hunter still has some vision, I always recommend consulting with a veterinary ophthalmologist. My dog developed glaucoma last year and the veterinary ophthalmologist was able to see him the same day. Hopefully you can find a veterinary ophthalmologist near you here.

There are a number of medications that can be used to decrease the eye pressure, but the most important thing is figuring what caused the glaucoma in the first place, which may require a trip to the ophthalmologist.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Oliver! Did they diagnosis him with glaucoma? If yes that is very painful and usually results in permanent blindness. You can ask your Vet for eye drops to lower the pressure in his eyes (for comfort purposes until surgery) and oral pain medications. You can also have your Vet refer you to a Veterinary ophthalmologist for a second opinion. I wish you and Oliver the best!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Copper is having ocular issues. Given your description, I would absolutely have Copper seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye) is incredibly painful and requires emergency treatment. Your veterinarian will be able to examine Copper and measure the pressures inside his eyes to determine what sort of therapy he needs. If addressed quickly, there is a chance of regaining vision. If left untreated, Copper will become irreversibly blind. I hope this is helpful!

My dog can't open his eyes. What over-the-counter eye drops help?

No, I would not use this on Snowy, it's not safe. This is for itchy eyes due to allergies, and it could be that he has an eye infection, which makes it a completely inappropriate medication. You should never try to self treat eye problems, as you could accidentally do serious damage to the eye. I would take him into the vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing his problem with his eyes, and can treat him. It's important to have any eye problem checked out and treated promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

My pug has pigmentary keratitis. What temporary eye drops can I use?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Scooters! The only thing you can do with out seeing a Vet is to start lubricating Scooters eyes. You can use Genteal lubricating drops (get the severe formula) and use at a minimum of three times a day, more if you can. Then get Scooters to a Vet as soon as you can. The brand I recommend is called Genteal Eye Lubricating Gel. I'm not sure if Jax has had confirmation of dry eye with a Schirmer Tear Test but there are other medications needed to treat this condition. If you are only suspecting dry eye, make an appointment with his vet to have this test to confirm if he needs the medications or not. There are other conditions that can look the same. Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC eye drops for pets. That's because a pet's eye reacts differently to human eye drops than a human eye, and giving them human drops without veterinary supervision can cause harm. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any eye problem should be considering an emergency. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Coochie into a vet now to his eye examined and treated.
