My pug has brown spots on her eyes. What causes them and how to treat?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. In pugs, this is a normal thing to see. There is increased pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the eye. Pugs can develop pigmentary keratitis, in which a dark film develops over the eye itself. This does not cause any pain and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make this go away or slow down the progression. If the eye becomes irritated, you can use steroid drops. Something that a vet would need to prescribe Dexter after examining him. I hope this helps! This is not normal, the cloudiness is due to swelling and the dark color is likely pigmentation, the eyes response to ongoing irritation and scarring. Please have her assessed to determine the underlying cause such as ulcers, dry eye or inturned eyelids. Urgent treatment is required to relieve pain and restore sight

While this could be pigmentary keratitis I am concerned that it looks like the pigment may be inside the eye which would mean that an iris cyst or mass would be more likely. I’d recommend having your vet take a look in person. If it is pigmentary keratitis then your vet would look for things that could cause inflammation or irritation of the cornea like dry eye, abnormal eyelashes or an inability to fully close the eye.

Pugs, as you know, are prone to develop several eye problems such as corneal ulcers and chronic inflammation of the cornea (so the cornea can become blackish on the surface due to chronic rubbing against either skin folds or cilia). I can see that there is a chronic irritation from the pics but cannot rule out the presence of corneal ulcers. This can be done by a physical examination at your local veterinarian and would be essential to give appropriate treatment. I would definitively recommend a check up to establish the presence of corneal ulcers first and then decide what treatment is needed.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having the I examined by a veterinarian so that further testing can be done to rule out possible causes. There could be trauma to the eye itself or an infection. In order to rule these out I would suggest having the vet take a look at the eye. For trauma to the surface of the eye, a simple stain test is performed to see if there is any retention of the stain on any area of the surface of the eye. From the photos, my main suspicion is that at some point, Frodo developed a corneal ulcer or abrasion that has resulted in inflammation on the surface of the eye, followed by chronic scarring changes, such as pigmentary keratitis. With a thorough eye exam, your vet will be able to determine if any active corneal ulcers are present, check Frodo's eye pressure and tear production to determine if any other issues are present. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions.
