What physical changes happen to a dog's body immediately after death?

It’s not unusual for their mouth to be in a variety of different positions at death, and depending on their skin type and breed, some dogs will appear to have their eyes closed. Unfortunately, the only way to know why she died would be to have an autopsy performed (called a necropsy in animals), either by your veterinarian or a veterinary pathologist if you have one nearby. Since it sounds like it happened quite suddenly and she was bleeding from her eyes, she may have had a bleeding disorder (this can be caused by ingesting rat poison, or by some hereditary or immune-mediated diseases), or she could have suffered a head trauma of some kind. Oh how horrible! I am so very sorry to hear that! I certainly can't tell you exactly what happened, but for a dog to have been hit by a train and killed with the body intact, they likely sustained a tremendous blow that rendered them unconscious immediately and there was enough damage to their internal organs that they never woke up. I think the tongue sticking out was likely because of the force with which Copper was hit. The tongue likely turned black quickly because of the lack of blood supply if there was internal organ damage. I am so very sorry for your loss and can imagine how difficult this is for you. I hope knowing that they were likely unconscious immediately gives you some comfort.

There could be a number of things causing his sudden death such as exposure to toxins, cancer, liver failure, heart disease, or even the bone if it caused an obstruction. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. You can ask your parents to take him into the vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for animals). This may give you some answers. With either of these problems, there is usually nothing anyone can do - even if it happened in the lobby of your vet's office and they were able to start working on him immediately, it's unlikely that this would have made any difference at all. So try not to feel guilty. It sounds like you did the best you could, and I don't believe it would have changed the outcome even if you had left immediately for the vet's office. These are the typical signs of a dog dying, The twitching may just be reflexes, and the mouth opening and closing is the unconscious brain which is not getting oxygen (because the heart already stiopped beating) telling the lungs to breathe. But, at that time the dog is already dead. I am sorry for your loss.

First off, I'm so sorry Choko died! It sounds like you were seeing agonal breathing, which can occur right before death. It's a sign the body is not receiving the oxygen it needs, and is indicative of cardiac arrest. More than likely, his heart rate was pretty slow at first so that it was hard to detect, and then Choko entered his final stages of life before passing away. This can happen in animals as they pass away, and I've personally seen it myself. It can be upsetting to see, but it is considering a natural behavior if that makes sense.
