My dog died. Is it normal for their eyes and mouth to be closed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 21 days old | 40 lbs

My Dixie died Saturday I seen her an hour before she did she was fine and energetic per usual . I’m not here to ask what she could’ve died from . It’s just that I’ve been reading a lot and I read something that said dogs die with there eyes open and mouth . She was so stiff like she been there for hours but wasn’t and her eyes was super shut like she does when she wants to sleep and her mouth was closed shut . Is that weird for a dog ? Other than the fact of sudden death . 1 yr next month

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s not unusual for their mouth to be in a variety of different positions at death, and depending on their skin type and breed, some dogs will appear to have their eyes closed. So the way you found her isn’t terribly out of the ordinary. I am so sorry for your sudden loss.
