My dog's penis ulcer and bloody discharge aren't improving with meds.

Hello, sorry to hear about Oscar. He could have an infection of his prepuce or penis. Additionally, he could have a UTI or urinary stones. Ideally, he should be examined by his veterinarian so that they can evaluate his penis, prepuce and look for evidence of stones or a UTI. Look for straining to urinate, persistent blood in urine, and leaking urine. If you note any of these, then have Oscar evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. With the chronic nature & non responsiveness to medications of this condition, I would be suspicious of a foreign object high up in the fornix of the sheath. It can be something as tiny as a piece of plant material like a grass awn or cedar chip or a tiny piece of stick. It is generally pretty easy to do the exam under anesthesia, but sometime it requires the use of a rhinoscope or bronchoscope to really get a 360 degree view of things all the way back. This presentation could be due to a trauma and localized secondary skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Chico could have a urethral prolapse, an infection or some type of trauma to that area. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Without treatment that tissue could become dead/necrotic, he could have trouble urinating which leads to other issues like kidney failure as well as long term damage like scarring. Do not give him any human medications as it can be toxic to dogs. Keep him from licking at the area and remove and discharge with a warm, moist, clean cloth.

If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.
