My dog's penis is bleeding. How do I stop the excessive bleeding?

He could have an infection and need an antibiotic. Keep the area clean, dry, and prevent him from licking the area until you can take him to the vet. If the bleeding seems excessive or he becomes lethargic than he should be seen immediately to rule out a clotting problem. .

It looks like Spanky might have a urethral prolapse in your picture. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian right away since the prolapsed tissue could become damaged and it could affect his ability to urinate normally. A veterinarian might place some suture around the penis if they are able to reduce the prolapse, but other times more in-depth surgery is needed.

Bleeding from the penis indicates a serious problem. In an unneutered dog, it could be a prostate infection, enlargement, or tumor. Some other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a systemic bleeding problem (coagulopathy). I suspect that his paw biting is unrelated and may be due to allergies or a hot spot, but he should definitely be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause of both issues and come up with a good treatment plan. One of the best ways to stop bleeding is with ice. I suggest you ice the prepuce/penis for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day for the next day or so. I really do think though the he should be re-examined by a vet if there is that much blood. That doesn't sound normal to me. Keep him from licking it if at all possible and if he is having any trouble urinating then get him seen by your vet ASAP. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! It is more likely to be a bruise - fractures are very rare and extremely painful. Monitor for continued bleeding or any difficulty urinating which would indicate the need for immediate veterinary attention. Encourage him to drink fluids in order to keep the system flushed out and reduce the risk of any blood clots become lodged

Hello, sorry to hear about Oscar. He could have an infection of his prepuce or penis. Additionally, he could have a UTI or urinary stones. Ideally, he should be examined by his veterinarian so that they can evaluate his penis, prepuce and look for evidence of stones or a UTI. Look for straining to urinate, persistent blood in urine, and leaking urine. If you note any of these, then have Oscar evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.
