Why is my dog bleeding from his penis even after vet treatment?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 116 lbs

Hi, my dog is a 10 yr old golden doodle. He has drips of blood coming from his penis. Our vet has examined him and also did urinalysis with sediment and an Ultrasound. they have ruled out the prostate cancers kidneystones and are currently treating with amox. for coverage of Bladder, though testing only showed athickened bladderwall onultrasound no sign ofinfectu.and on urinalysishisPh was off.. He finished a course of Youman Bai yao, the bleeding had Stopped,5 days later he is again bleeding.

Unfortunately, I suspect that he needs further testing or repeat testing to determine the result. In cases such as his, a bleeding disorder, bladder cancer, a urinary tract infection or bladder stones are most likely. You may consider seeking a second opinion with an internal medicine specialist if his regular veterinarian has not been able to diagnose his problem. I hope this information helps!

Poor Chunchy! The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him to determine the cause. He could have an infection, injury, bleeding disorder, etc. and your vet can do an examination to diagnose and then determine if treatment is needed. He may need an antibiotic and/or pain medications to help treat the problem. Hope he feels better soon!

Based on the signs, he could have a urinary tract infection and/or bladder stones. He should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can test a urine sample for infection and then prescribe an antibiotic, if needed.

He could have a bladder infection from not emptying his bladder completely. Your vet can check a urine sample to see if he has an infection and needs an antibiotic. Glad he is recovering from the fce.

My dog's penis is bleeding. How do I stop the excessive bleeding?

If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.

My unneutered male dog is bleeding from his penis. What's the cause?

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

Why is my senior dog's urine still pink/bloody after antibiotics?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. Is my dog's penis bleeding from a UTI? When will it stop?

If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. I recommend having Nemo examined by a veterinarian and having a urine sample checked to see if an infection is present. He may need X-rays to rule out a bladder stone.
