My dog's penis is inflamed and he's licking it. Can I use antiseptic?

A certain amount of discharge, especially in intact male dogs, may be normal. This discharge is known as smegma. Take him to your regular vet when they open for an examination and diagnosis. They will be able to provide appropriate pain relief and treatment.

Usually penile discharge is due to an infection of the penile tissue itself known as balanitis. His constant licking will be leading to more inflammation. Your vet should be able to treat this easily with antibiotics and it would be good to have him wear a cone to stop the licking whilst it heals.

Hello. The skin irritation is probably from being shaved too close, or possibly even from the shampoo not being completely rinsed from the skin. I would bathe Uno in cool water, no soap & gently dry him. The discharge from his prepuce could be a normal secretion called smegma. It could also be balanoposthitis, inflammation of the glans penis & prepuce with excessive preputial discharge. While mild cases can be self-limiting, more severe cases can lead to abscess formation & scarring. His penis looks inflamed, possibly infected, you will need to take him to the vet to get it checked, he will need to wear an e-collar in order to prevent from him to continue licking his penis and getting it worse, he will also need an antibiotic course.

This looks like a localised spot of skin infection which can be easily treated its antibiotic and antiinflammatory ointment on prescription from your veterinarian. The fact that he is licking his paw as well can be due to an allergy, which possibly can be considered in case infection is not resolved with treatment trial. I would recommend a check up at your local vet to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Poor Larry. The color change is most likely to him licking/biting at his penis and causing a small amount of trauma. I would recommend taking larry to the vet to determine the cause of the discharge. It is possible that larry has a urinary tract infection or possible normal discharge because he is not neutered. I would try and check and make sure he does not have anything around his penis that might be causing him pain/discomfort. However, a vet visit would be best. I am not sure what this area truly looks like. I would try picking hip up with back against your stomach and chest and having someone else snap the photo of his genital area. If there is green discharge and pain then he likely has an infection. Hydrogen peroxide should be stopped immediately, because in pets this can actually cause the normal cells to die off on the skin. You can try using Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine 3% diluted with water to antiseptically cleanse the area. Soaking him in a warm water Epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes can also help alleviate some irritation and inflammation. I would also visit your local pet store and purchase an e-collar to place on him so that he can't continue licking the area and causing further irritation and pain. Hopefully this will help maintain him until he is seen by your vet on Monday. Poor guy.
