A certain amount of discharge, especially in intact male dogs, may be normal. This discharge is known as smegma. If there is an increased amount or if you notice a foul odor, excessive licking and difficulty urinating, then it may be that he has an infection either in the urinary tract or under the prepuce. Take him to your regular vet when they open for an examination and diagnosis. They will be able to provide appropriate pain relief and treatment.

Small amount of green liquid or discharge may be completely normal (that is a secretion called smegma).

Excessive amount could be caused by an infection of the external genitalia or a deeper urinary tract infection.

a check up and possibly urine analysis would be absolutely needed to determine the underlying nature of it and treat appropriately.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The green smegma from the prepuce is very common in the in tact male dog and almost always nothing to worry about. If it is coupled with frequent or bloody urination, straining, or excessive licking, that may be more of a concern.

The lethargy though, concerns me. If he is still lethargic by morning, it's time to see the vet for a good exam and some testing if needed.

It looks lika a little bit of urine or smegma. Some discharge is quite normal, but if there is a lot of it, its very smelly or he seems irritated down there he may a little infection and need antibiotics.

It is normal for intact male dogs to have some greenish discharge from the penis (smegma). If he is acting sick, that probably does not have anything to do with it. If he is sick you need to get him to a vet for an exam.

There is a normal yellow/green mucoid discharge (called smegma) that male dogs have to coat the penis inside the prepuce. There could also be an infection, like a bladder infection, but typically they have signs of increased thirst, frequent urination, and producing small amounts of urine at a time. To be sure, I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam and they can check the urine. If he isn't showing the other signs, I am suspicious this is the normal discharge male dogs have. My male dog has pus-like discharge from his urethra. What's wrong?

Some dogs can have a little discharge from the prepuce that looks like this and it nothing to be concerned about. If Nugget is urinating frequently or straining to urinate it could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. Sometimes foreign material can become lodged in the prepuce (the skin that surrounds the penis) and can cause irritation. If there is a lot of discharge, if Nugget is continuously licking his prepuce, or if you see any urinary changes as noted above I'd recommend seeing your vet.

This is most likely normal discharge and not an infection. If the discharge is thick, green/yellow than it may indicate a urinay tract infection. But based on his age and being an intact male it sounds very normal and not like a medical problem.

My intact male dog has a sweet-smelling discharge. Is it serious?

If it is the brown stuff I am seeing in the picture, it could be a small yeast infection (that is consistent with the smell you describe as well). Trim the hairs around the penis and then I would just try 25% white vinegar 75% water solution on a cloth and gently clean twice daily. If the discharge is white/creamy, yellow tinged, or even a bit crusty, that can be normal - especially for an in tact male dog. If there is problems urinating, blood in the urine or blood in the discharge, or very large amounts of the discharge, then I am more concerned. Unfortunately we are not legally allowed to recommend specific drugs/doses without a physical exam (also I have no idea what's available near you), so you'd have to call or visit the vet in that instance. My male dog has pus, scabs, discharge on his penis. Is it infected?

It is normal to have a small amount of discharge coming from the prepuce. However, if it is so excessive you are having to clean it every few hours, this is not normal. Your dog may have a preputial infection or a bladder or prostate infection. I would recommend taking Pluto to the vet to be checked out. He may need a course of antibiotics and/or a special antibacterial flush for his prepuce. In the meantime, continue to keep it as clean as you can and prevent him from licking as much as you can.
