My dog has a new pea-sized bump with a sore on his skin. What is it?

What you have described sounds like a skin pustule which can be seen with infection or even secondary to an insect bite. If you only notice one, I would not worry. If you notice multiple pustules, Bentley may have a skin infection. Follow up with your veterinarian if notice multiple pustules.

This does seem rather small in size and could very well be an insect bite. Since it isn't really bothering him, I would recommend monitoring this for now to see if this will spontaneously resolve If it is still present after 2 weeks or worsens at any time, then its best to get your vet to take a look at this on physical exam. This appears to be a possible pustule (infected small pocket underneath the skin). If just one of these is present and it isn't causing any discomfort, then I would suggest monitoring the area to see if it resolves on its own. You can gently clean the area with a mild soap (ie Dove) and warm water and placing a very thin layer of Neosporin to the bump to see if it goes away. However if it starts to spread or does not resolve within a week or two then a vet visit is needed to get Louie on a short course of antibiotics to get this to heal well. I'm not sure from the picture if it's just the mass the side a little bigger than your thumb nail, or if the entire 6 inch round area around the main bump is red. Either way, I would be worried about a growth first and then perhaps an insect bite if you've only noticed it today. Young dogs can have a type of mass called a histiocytoma that is benign and goes away on it's own eventually. I would recommend a vet visit if it's growing in size, just to be on the safe side.

It could be a small insect bite or minor skin infection, the rest of her skin looks pretty normal. Keep an eye on it, keep it clean with a warm damp washcloth and rub in a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment without steroid, as steroids slow healing. If it doesn't improve significantly in a few days, gets worse, spreads, or if she starts feeling sick or itching, get her an appointment with her vet.

A small area like this could be inflammation as a result of an insect bite or wound, inflammation as a result of bacterial infection (though usually we would see more then just one lump) or a growth/tumor of the skin (we can have benign growths that don't cause any health concerns or growths that are malignant and require removal). Unfortunately without an exam and a sample (taken with a needle most often ) we can't tell you for certain the cause. If it isn't bothering your dog I would continue to monitor it daily. It is from an insect bite or wound it should resolve over the next couple weeks. If it is still there in a month or is increasing in size or changing appearance then a vet visit to investigate the area further is warranted.

This may be a pimple (little abscess), cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian as tumors should be removed ASAP. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. Your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning. Since this is obviously bothering your dog (it looks like Bentley is licking it), I would have this examined very soon.
