What to do about a sore bump on my dog's leg? Should I worry?

I doesn't look like an insect bite. It could be a small wart or other mass. The only way to know for sure would be to have it examined by a vet and have a sample evaluated under the microscope. There is a type of tumor called a Mast Cell Tumor that can cause itching.

I can see the small, raised, slightly red hairless lump on Hazel's paw in the photo. This may be a bug bite, localized skin infection, or a mass (which is less likely in younger dogs). I recommend having the area examined by a vet to determine the underlying cause and begin the appropriate treatment. In the meantime, you can get Hazel an E-collar or "cone" to prevent her licking the area and causing further trauma and irritation.

I see what you mean about the lump, it is quite big and red. Bruce is a young dog, so the chances of it being malignant are not high at all. I would be wondering if it is from an insect bite, a cyst, or potentially a foreign body in it like a grass seed. I do think it's a good idea to get checked out by a vet tomorrow, but I would not have a digital tumor high on my list as a potential diagnosis. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It could be a wound from trauma, tick/insect bite, or a histiocytoma. Histiocytoma’s are benign growths on young dogs that are pink raised button like masses that can ulcerate. They tend to form more often on the limbs. They also tend to go away on their own in a few months. You can clean it and apply an antibiotic cream and prevent licking up see if it resolves. It it persists or grows I’d have your vet look at it. It could also be a mild skin infection. Dogs can develop skin masses/tumors such as mast cell tumors. I would recommend having Sky seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the area and discuss the need for additional testing such as an impression of the area or collecting a small needle sample. It could be a small cyst, pustule/papule, or possibly a Histiocytoma which is a benign mass that is common in young dogs. Since it is getting more red, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. The vet may want to aspirate it and examine the contents under a microscope. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, it may need to be removed, or just monitored (histiocytomas typically resolve with no treatment). You could use an over the counter spray, like Vetricyn, and see if that helps relieve any redness or discomfort.

It is impossible to diagnose a bump from a picture, but some of the possibilities include soft tissue swelling from a trauma, a strain or sprain, inflammation from a sting or bite, of the presence of a small tear in the joint capsule in the carpal area. You can try alternating warm & cold compresses on the area for about 10 minutes 3 times a day, & if it is no better in 3-4 days, or she develops a limp, please see your veterinarian. Take care.
