My dog has a hard, movable lump with yellow crust. What is it?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 5 years old

My dog has a small lump the size of a 5 pence on her lower back under the sick. It is hard to touch however it is moveable and doesn't appear to be attached to anything. There is all so yellow crusty stuff around the lump however there doesn't see to be an opening. Do you have any idea what this could be?

A small area like this could be inflammation as a result of an insect bite or wound, inflammation as a result of bacterial infection (though usually we would see more then just one lump) or a growth/tumor of the skin (we can have benign growths that don't cause any health concerns or growths that are malignant and require removal). Unfortunately without an exam and a sample (taken with a needle most often ) we can't tell you for certain the cause. If it isn't bothering your dog I would continue to monitor it daily. It is from an insect bite or wound it should resolve over the next couple weeks. If it is still there in a month or is increasing in size or changing appearance then a vet visit to investigate the area further is warranted.

Poor Blade! Without being able to actually see the lump or examine him in person, it's hard to say what this might be. It could be a localized infection or inflammatory reaction to an insect bite or something similar, a cyst, or even a skin tumor of some kind. He/she can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate if needed to determine what it is, and will advise you on whether it needs to be removed or not depending on the results.

My dog has a soft, white, pea-sized lump on its belly. Is it serious?

This appears to be a possible pustule (infected small pocket underneath the skin). If just one of these is present and it isn't causing any discomfort, then I would suggest monitoring the area to see if it resolves on its own. You can gently clean the area with a mild soap (ie Dove) and warm water and placing a very thin layer of Neosporin to the bump to see if it goes away. However if it starts to spread or does not resolve within a week or two then a vet visit is needed to get Louie on a short course of antibiotics to get this to heal well. This could just be a bite or spot that has caused a bit of allergic reaction in the skin. If it is an area of allergy or infection it will resolve with time. If it doesn't go away it is a mass in the skin, such tumours can be benign or cancerous but need to be tested to know.

What's this bump scab on my dog's head and what should I do?

If this just appears to be a crusted area and is not raised, it is possible this was an insect bite that got irritated or a small scratch/wound. If the lesion is raised (I can't really tell from the appearance) then we sometimes get warty skin growths that can get traumatized and bleed/crust over. I would wash the area with a mild soap or Hibiclens (available at most drug stores) and apply a topical antibiotic like Polysporin or Neosporin a few times day. If she is scratching/rubbing at the area she may need an e-collar for a few days to stop self-trauma. If the lesions isn't improving after several days of this or it starts to get larger/other spots appear then these would be reasons to seek veterinary care.

It is possible this could be a cyst. Cysts can decrease in size, especially if the vet used a needle to aspirate fluid from the cyst. They do not, however, usually go away completely and will often fill back up. In some cases, these cysts will rupture and can cause pain or result in infection, so the best course if it seems to be causing problems is to remove it surgically.

Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors.
