My dog's paw was bitten through a fence. Does he need stitches?

It would heal better and faster with stitches. If you cannot afford to have that done then just keep it clean with this wound spray linked below. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on it - that will actually delay healing. If after a week it is not looking better or if it gets red, swollen, has pus coming from it then you will need to get him to the vet. Ouch! That does look pretty painful. If it's not healing with home care, I'd definitely bring Aspen into your vet. They can provide oral antibiotics and pain medications as needed, and can help deeply clean the wound to flush out any dirt or debris. Paw pads can sometimes be hard to stitch up, especially since it's on a walking surface, so keeping it as clean and dry as possible is best, however your vet can close the wound with wound glute or stitches as needed if it isn't healing, or is larger than a few centimeters in length.

From what I can see in the photo, Abby does have a small cut on her paw pad that is bleeding but is pretty superficial and does not have any discharge. It is unlikely to require stitches, but may be infected due to the redness surrounding it. You did the right thing by preventing Abby from licking the area but I recommend having the cut evaluated by a vet to determine if oral antibiotics are needed. Ouch, poor Koda! It looks like he injured his pad, and it could be that it's torn. I would say it definitely needs veterinary treatment, as it may need some stitches or surgical glue to help it heal correctly. In addition, it's clearly painful to him as he's limping. I would bandage it to keep it clean and dry, and take him into the vet tomorrow or Monday. You may need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. It doesn't appear deep. If there is no active bleeding, clean it up with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. I see you have a triple antibiotic ointment. You can dab a bit on the area. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. Monitor for lethargy, fever, bleeding, swelling, discharge or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

This does look like an infection and ideally you should take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam and medication against pain and infection. You can try to bathe the foot in very warm epsom salt solution for 10 minutes three times daily which may help the infection or the abscess to ripen, open up and evacuate any untoward infectious material. If the paw does not improve within two to three days or if the paw gets worse you will need to take Chance to your vet.

You can also apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the area once clean. Do not apply a bandage to the area. It should scab over in 24-48 hours.
