My stray dog died. Are my dogs safe from parvovirus? How to know?

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

Parvo is highly contagious and affected dogs are lethargic, cannot hold food or water, vomit and have bloody diarrhea and eventually die of dehydration and sepsis if not treated. If your dog has had a full course of vaccinations and is older than 2 years then there is little chance that she has been infected as well. You should disinfect the garage and everything your mom's dog came in contact with using a bleach solution or disinfectant and do not let your dog run around in the area where the sick dog was until after it is disinfected. Watch for signs of lethargy, refusal to eat and general illness and if your dog shows these signs take her to a vet right away.

I'm sorry that cat died! How terrible for you! Without seeing the cat in person, I can't say for certain what caused him to die, but he could have been injured or attacked leading to his symptoms. To protect the cats, yes you want to vaccinated and deworm them. Regular vet visit is recommended, and letting them stay indoors at night would also help protect them. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can check for this or check if he has anything else going on. She could have parvo. If this is a stray dog I suggest you either take her to your local animal shelter or call animal control to come pick her up so she can get treatment. If you want to keep her then I suggest you take her to your local vet for an exam. I know this one is a little ways from you but you could call them for advice. Hello, and thanks for using PetCoach. The most important thing is that your dog was vaccinated for Rabies prior to this attack, and that you boostered his vaccine again afterwards. The rabies vaccine is quite effective, and boostering the vaccine after the attack will help in case one of the unvaccinated dog did have rabies. Ideally, it would be beneficial to observe all 3 dogs for 10 days after the attack, but you have done everything right with your own dog. If that third missing dog did have rabies and has since died, then the other two (unvaccinated) dogs would likely need to be euthanized, and your dog would need to be closely monitored for several months - but the risk of your dog contracting rabies with an up-to-date vaccination status is very very low. I'm very sorry to hear that this happened! Unfortunately, there is no way to know why the puppies got sick and died unless an autopsy was done on one or more of them, or some testing was done before they passed away. Parvo is certainly one possibility - the incubation period for this virus is 7-10 days, so this means that they were probably exposed sometime before their vet visit and began showing symptoms a few days later. They also could have had distemper, canine herpesvirus, or a severe intestinal parasite burden - all of these can cause death in young puppies as well. I would not expect the vaccine to have had anything to do with this, since it would be extremely uncommon for all of the puppies in a litter to all have a serious vaccine reaction. Serious reactions are quite rare, and normally affected dogs become extremely sick immediately and die within 24 hours - so the timing doesn't really fit either. It's likely that the timing of the vaccine was a coincidence, and the cause of death was an infectious disease or some other unrelated event. Again, I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend's pups.
