My sick stray cat died. How to protect my other unvaccinated strays?

I am so very sorry that you lost your cats. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing them in person, I can't say what caused them to die, but it may have been something contagious. It could have been something like feline Panleukopenia, it's highly contagious. The other option is they all got into something toxic. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry that your cat had such an awful passing. Unfortunately, without an exam it would be hard to say. If there was a large parasite load, dying parasites can block/obstruct the intestines, and some parasites such as heartworm can block arteries leading to death, but it would be hard to say if this or another issue was the cause of Bendingo's passing. If you do get another cat, making sure they are regularly dewormed and up to date on vaccines can help them stay healthy. Working with your vet and having regular exams done can also help check for any health issues that need treatment as well.

It would be helpful to know the age of kittens when you got them and how soon they developed symptoms as this would help determine whether they had it before you got them or were exposed afterwards, by other cats or possibly common food bowls, litter trays etc. I would recommend getting an older cat/kitten that has been fully vaccinated at least 3weeks before you take it next time and sterilise or replace all bedding, bowls etc

I'm so sorry about Sky! Not being vaccinated is definitely a possiblity behind her death. Parasites or other infections could have been a cause as well. Given that he has been on the streets, he likely has intestinal worms, and will need a deworming treatment. I would have him seen by a vet first thing tomorrow for a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis. It may also be advisable to test him for FIV and FeLV since he's been out on the streets. The vaccines he needs includes FVRCP and rabies. He will also need flea treatments and heartworm treatment, and he should be tested for heartworms before getting the heartworm treatment.

How lovely of you to look after this stray! There are a number of things that could cause him to lose weight, such as intestinal worms, diabetes, kidney disease, or hyperthyroidism to name a few. He could also possibly have fleas. It's important to make sure your cats are up to date on their flea treatments and deworming treatments. As for the stray, I would take him into the SPCA if you don't want to assume financial responsibility for him. They can get him the veterinary attention he needs and find him a home. Otherwise, you can take him into the vet yourself :-)
