Does Parvo in puppies cause long-term behavior or development issues?

We don't normally see neurological or behavioral effects after parvo virus infection. We can, however, see behavioral changes as pets reach sexual maturity, particularly if they are not neutered. I would recommend having your vet examine him to be sure he isn't having any unidentified pain or illness making him crabby and to discuss neutering him and behavior modification that may help his situation.

Parvovirus is difficult to treat, mostly because it requires extensive fluid and nutritional support. There is no medication that will cure the virus, and treatment is supportive until the puppy clears the virus naturally. It depends heavily on when treatment starts and how far along in the infection the puppy was. Parvovirus damages the intestinal lining, which results in watery diarrhea and an inability of the puppy to absorb nutrients from food. The good news is that the intestinal lining replenishes itself every few days or so, so there is no chronic damage to the intestine. Puppies who recover from parvo can go on to live perfectly normal lives, but may be a little skinnier that other puppies their age. If you are planning to adopt Penny, I recommend making sure she has been symptom free and is eating/drinking on her own before bringing her home to avoid her becoming dehydrated or lethargic. There are a number of possibilities but it sounds like her brain and possibly her vision become affected, possibly from epileptic seizures or from a brain injury or viral damage. I recommend you video these episodes and show them to your vet, they may want to start her on seizure medication; blood work and mri imaging may also be recommended to investigate medical and neurological causes

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bruno! He is very cute! Parvo virus doesn't normally affect bone structural growth. It can affect the heart if they contract it very very young. If Bruno contracted parvo in his first few days of life then the heart complications are possible. I can't tell from your post if he got parvo at 3 days old or 3 days ago. As for drinking milk, at 8 weeks of age Bruno can be drinking water and eating just dog food. He should be about weaned off milk products. You can syringe water gently and slowly in his mouth. If he is recovering from infection 3 days ago then you can also syringe watered down canned dog food. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bruno the best!

Parvo virus is transmitted from the feces/vomit of one infected dog directly to another (it can survive in the soiled environment for over 12months if not adequately cleaned and disinfected with bleach). She should be isolated from any areas where she may have contact with non-vaccinated dogs or their feces until after her second parvo vaccination but your own house (or enclosed garden) should be relatively safe as long as any accidents from your previous pup have been removed and bleached/steamed

So sorry to hear this happened. Yes, parvo is very serious and they will often get worse before they get better. Sometimes though, they do not recover despite aggressive treatment. I'm not sure what her vaccination status is but please, in the future, be sure any puppies get their full series of vaccinations. It is a series of vaccinations beginning at 6-8 weeks of age and then given every 3-4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks of age. The vaccines should be given by a veterinarian where you know the source of the vaccines and that they have been stored/handled properly. It is very rare for a properly vaccinated puppy to get parvo.
