What should I feed a puppy recovering from parvovirus at home?

You can and should start feeding Ivy gently by syringe, if she will not eat on her own, as soon as the vomiting has stopped. I would blenderize canned puppy food with water or purchase a canned recovery diet (like Hill's a/d) from your Vet. Parvo is tough, they usually get worse before they get better. It can take 5-7 days when they are hospitalized to get better. Parvo can be deadly, so if Ivy is non stop vomiting and is losing a lot of fluids she should be rechecked. Puppies die from parvo due to secondary dehydration and sepsis. I hope this helps and I wish Ivy a speedy recovery!

These diets break down easier in they system and will help to avoid shocking his system. He should eat the diet for two weeks before gradually transiting back to his normal food. I'm glad he is recovering!

The Royal Canin Giant Starter is a balanced diet on it's own. You do not need to, nor should you, feed anything else. Fruits are not good - too high in sugar. The egg and cottage cheese are probably fine but really not necessary. I understand you may be vegetarian but please understand that dogs are not and they need meat in order to survive. My recommendation is to only feed the Royal Canin. He doesn't appear to be too thin in the photos.

It would be worth to go to the hospital with Rocko's favourite food and see if he will eat for you. If so, your vets are likely to let you take him home. It does happen that some dogs will refuse to eat hospital food but they will go for their favourite treats when offered by the owners. Many puppies with parvo are fed via a stomach tube while in the hospital. If this is the case with Rocko, you can ask your vet to send your puppy home with the tube in. Then, you could feed your puppy through the tube at home (it is straight forward). Lastly, syringe feeding of special recovery food can be done at home as well, so with some instructions from your vet you should be able to feed Rocko yourself.

Just regular canned puppy food would be fine. She may not like what you are feeding. Just getting some calories in her is important. If she is drinking on her own or eating canned food well, then you can stop with the Pedialyte - some dogs really don't like the taste. If she won't eat the canned puppy food (which would be best) you can try bland human foods like: *plain white rice *scrambled eggs * boiled chicken breast * plain pasta No butter, oil or spices on the food.

If your dog is recovering from parvo you should not be offering any foods other than his regular diet or bland meals of boiled rice and chicken as the other foods may cause the already irritated intestinal lining to become worse or prolong the irritation. If he is not eating his food there may still be some underlying pain or GI upset. You can offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken for a day or so, however if the lack of appetite continues or he does not begin to eat his food it is best to seek veterinary care.

Hello. That is great that Captain still wants to eat. If there is no vomiting, then feed him his regular puppy chow. He should probably be eating 3-4 cups a day, but go easy by feeding small meals more frequently, perhaps 1/2 cup every 2 hours. If he vomits, cut back.
