My poodle has pancreatitis. Why is his vomiting recovery inconsistent?

The urination doesn't necessarily alarm me - I expect Winston is probably receiving a lot of fluids via an IV catheter, so he is likely producing a lot of urine and may have just really needed to urinate! However, I do worry that he's still vomiting despite his anti-nausea medication. The vet treating him will definitely be the best resource for input on his overall prognosis, since they have the full picture and can examine him in person. I think you're right to be concerned, but I wouldn't be giving up hope - some serious cases of pancreatitis just need several days of hospitalization before they start to turn around. Hi there. Switching to a bland diet was a great idea. As far as home remedies, there isn't much else to try. It's good that she is no longer vomiting, but make sure she is closely monitored for signs of lethargy, further vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

The sooner you get pancreatitis treated the better for the pet. 48 hrs is not the worst response time but then again within 24 hrs is best. However, if you did respond within 48 hrs and proceed to go forward with aggressive treatment now for his pancreatitis, then his chances of making a full recovery are increased. Some pets require hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, pain management, antibiotics (if indicated), etc. While others can be treated by sending medications home with the owner. If Jackson is not eating well and his lab findings as well as physical exam findings suggest that hospitalization would be in his best interest, then I would high recommend considering that course of treatment for him. Poor puddin, it sounds like she may need to be hospitalized for pain medications and intravenous fluids and medications, force feeding is not appropriate if she is that distressed and she is unlikely to recover without medical intervention. Contact your vet for a recheck and possibly admission

You will need to take your dog back to the vet for a recheck. The veterinarian should prescribe pain medicine for your dog. If he has not had an ultrasound exam yet, this may be the time to have one, in order to check out whether he has an abscess or tumor on his pancreas. By now he should not be in pain anymore, especially since his body functions have returned to normal (no vomiting, no diarrhea, and eating and drinking.).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!
