My dog has pancreatitis. Is 48 hours to vet quick enough for recovery?

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

Pancreatitis can present in many ways, the majority of which are nauseous and painful but not particularly weak and debilitated and respond favourably to symptomatic treatment and an ultra low fat diet. Severe pancreatitis is very rare and typically prevents with severe dehydration and collapse and can become life threatening, requiring hospital treatment

He should stay in the hospital as long as possible on IV fluids/medications. Sometimes it takes a week or longer before they start getting better. Was an abdominal ultrasound done? That would be a good idea. He should be held off food until he is better. At the hospital the vet can feed him nutritionally through the IV catheter with something called TPN. He should be given food orally. This would be my suggestions. Pancreatitis cannot really be treated at home.

Hello, sorry to hear about Lichi. Dogs affected with pancreatitis will respond differently to medical management. Some will improve within 24 hours, some will take longer up to 3-5 days to recover. Treatment with pain medications, gastroprotectants, anti-nausea, anti-diarrhea, occasionally appetite stimulants, and even a temporary feeding tube may be necessary and dependent on how Lichi responds to initial treatment. It sounds like to me from your post that you would feel more comfortable having Bella at the ER vet where she will be monitored 24/7, and that's perfectly fine! She's your baby, and you need to do what makes you feel most comfortable and what you feel is best for her. The vet wouldn't allow her to stay over the weekend if they didn't feel it would be safe for her; if they felt she needed the added monitoring, they would recommend transferring her to the ER clinic. It's good that her liver and kidney values are ok, and that she is eating. That being said, if you aren't comfortable with it, then it's fine to take her to the ER vet. You may sleep better at night knowing there is someone present 24/7 for her. I can't tell you what to do, but if your vet says it's safe to keep her at their office, it should be safe. You need to do what makes you happiest, however, and if you feel that's at the ER, then it's fine taking her there. I hope this helps!

The urination doesn't necessarily alarm me - I expect Winston is probably receiving a lot of fluids via an IV catheter, so he is likely producing a lot of urine and may have just really needed to urinate! However, I do worry that he's still vomiting despite his anti-nausea medication. The vet treating him will definitely be the best resource for input on his overall prognosis, since they have the full picture and can examine him in person. I think you're right to be concerned, but I wouldn't be giving up hope - some serious cases of pancreatitis just need several days of hospitalization before they start to turn around.
