My dog with pancreatitis ate butter. Peroxide caused coughing. Help!

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 82 lbs

My 82lbs, 4 Year old, male, Rottweiler is currently still in recovery from pancreatitis. While alone for less than 5 min ate 1/2 a stick of butter before I caught him. called my vet because is condition and was told to induce vomiting with "2tbs of hydrogen peroxide every 10 min until he vomits." 8tbs in no vomiting. I think, this can't be good for him and look it up and everything says only 2 doses. Hes acting okay but never did vomit. he is coughing. should I be worried or looking for anythin?

Oh my, poor Max has been through a lot lately! As you know, the butter ingestion could certainly exacerbate his pancreatitis. I don't personally recommend using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting because more recent studies have shown that it causes damage to the linings of the esophagus, stomach and intestines in nearly all dogs that receive it. I'm glad that you've stopped giving the peroxide at this point. If he isn't vomiting after 8 tablespoons, it's unlikely that it will cause him to vomit at all. Since he's received so much peroxide and is now coughing, I would recommend taking him to the vet. Your vet may want to take some chest x-rays to be sure that Max didn't aspirate (inhale) anything, that could be causing his coughing. Likewise, they may need to prescribe antacids and medication to coat his esophagus and stomach to protect him against ulceration. As far as the butter and pancreatitis situation goes, time will tell. Your vet will likely recommend continuing a low fat or bland diet for a longer period of time than he would have otherwise needed and may also extend the course of any anti-nausea medications. Since the treatment for pancreatitis is supportive, his supportive care measure may just be extended longer. I hope this helps and that Max feels better soon!

    I'd take Max into a vet now to have vomiting safely induced with a shot. If he's recovering from pancreatitis, eating this butter can certainly set it off again. You've tried at home with no success, now it's time to see the vet to get help. Best of luck.

I would not repeat anymore peroxide. Since he has already ingested it, all you can do is wait to see if pancreatitis occurs. You can feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help minimize the work the pancreas and intestines have to do. You should monitor for further vomiting and diarrhea or a painful abdomen. If you notice any of these, then get him checked right away for pancreatitis

My dog has dry heaves after vomiting from hydrogen peroxide. How to help?
The peroxide can be very irritating to the esophagus and stomach lining. It is the main reason we do not recommend using it to induce vomiting. You can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, allowing small, frequent amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a soft, bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Start with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no dry heaving or vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to Gene's regular diet. If the dry heaving persists, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

My dog ate a stick of butter. Is it dangerous? What should I do?
Naughty dog! I too have a counter surfer. ;) The biggest concern here would be possible pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) due to the high fat content. (the pancreas produces enzymes that help digest fat, and when the pancreas is overwhelmed it can cause pancreatitis). Generally symptoms include vomiting, inappetence, and abdominal pain. Its not LIKELY to cause pancreatitis if your dog doesn't have a history of this problem, but it is POSSIBLE. It will likely cause some loose stools. If you have an emergency hospital nearby, you could consider taking him there for them to induce vomiting, to try to minimize the chances of him developing pancreatitis. (If you are the "do everything I absolutely can to prevent a problem" type.) However, I don't think it is absolutely imperative that you do that....unless he has a history of pancreatitis in the past. It is reasonable to just monitor him at home, and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for next day or two. Expect some loose stools, but if he starts to become lethargic and/or starts vomiting and/or is not wanting to eat, take him to your vet. My dog ate garlic butter 12 hrs ago, now puking/coughing. Emergency?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!

My dog ate too much peanut butter and is throwing up. Vet needed?
Poor little guy! Before doing anything else, check the ingredient list on your peanut butter to check for xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, causing sudden drops in blood sugar that can lead to seizures, liver failure, and even death in severe cases. If xylitol is listed on the ingredients, take your dog to an ER vet immediately. However, if xylitol is not a concern, it certainly sounds as if your puppy has some stomach upset. This could be a result of gastroenteritis from eating too much of a fatty food, or he may be developing pancreatitis. Definitely stop feeding him for the next 12-24 hours. When you begin feeding him again, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days before slowly transitioning back to his normal diet. If he continues vomiting today, he should be seen by a vet to assess his hydration and administer supportive care (fluids, anti-nausea medication, etc.). I hope he feels better soon!

Is dog sluggish and vomiting brown normal after hydrogen peroxide?
The hydrogen peroxide can definitely cause a dark discoloration of mouth and esophagus; and can also lead to ulcerations in the esophagus and stomach. This would also cause there to be blood noticed in the saliva and vomit. If he's eating well, then I wouldn't be too worried about severe damage to the stomach or esophagus, but the fact that he's vomiting does indicate that there is still some irritation there. The sluggishness could be due to the Ambien, or could indicate another problem causing him to not feel well. It's best to have a vet evaluate Chulo sometime soon to ensure there is nothing serious going on. I hope that helps and Chulo feels better soon.

My dog is vomiting and has diarrhea. Is it pancreatitis? Emergency?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!
