My dog has dry heaves after vomiting from hydrogen peroxide. How to help?

Withhold food for the next 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly back to his regular diet. A small bit of plain toilet paper should pass on it's own without issues. Monitor for persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he keeps dry heaving, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

If the vomiting was solely due to motion sickness, I would have expected it to have stopped at this point, once she was out of the car. Vomiting can have a number of causes in dogs, both related to the GI tract (parasites, intestinal blockage, foreign objects in the stomach, bacterial or viral infections) as well as non GI-related (kidney or liver issues, pancreatitis, etc). The fact that she is now dry-heaving is especially concerning, as non-productive vomiting (i.e. retching repeatedly without bringing anything up) is a common sign of the very serious GI issue known as "bloat" or "GDV". In this condition, the stomach fills with air and/or food, and then flips around, essentially blocking the entry/exit points. I would take Hannah in for veterinary care immediately, first to rule out GDV and then to get definitive diagnosis and treatment for the vomiting.

The dose of peroxide needed to induce vomiting is 1 milliliter (ml) per pound of dog weight. The maximum amount of hydrogen peroxide to be given at any one time is 45 ml, even if a dog weighs over 45 pounds. It's OK that you gave it and he didn't vomit it is just that peroxide is very irritating to the stomach lining and cause ulcerations and other issues. I suggest you feed him a couple pieces of bread to help "soak up" the peroxide as it passes through his system.

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

The hydrogen peroxide can definitely cause a dark discoloration of mouth and esophagus; and can also lead to ulcerations in the esophagus and stomach. This would also cause there to be blood noticed in the saliva and vomit. If he's eating well, then I wouldn't be too worried about severe damage to the stomach or esophagus, but the fact that he's vomiting does indicate that there is still some irritation there. The sluggishness could be due to the Ambien, or could indicate another problem causing him to not feel well. It's best to have a vet evaluate Chulo sometime soon to ensure there is nothing serious going on. I hope that helps and Chulo feels better soon.

Since she has been dry heaving over 30 hours, Macie should be examind by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, obstruction, parasite, pancreatitis, etc. and your vet can run lab-work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and determine the best way to treat. She may just need an anti-vomiting medication, antacid, and/or a gastrointestinal protectant to help.
