My dog has a painful wound near his anus. What home care helps?

Based on the location (it appears to be just to the side and just below the anus), an anal gland abscess may have ruptured. I doubt it’s an insect bite, but I can’t rule that out completely. It could also be another type of mass such as a tumor or a foreign body (such as a grass seed) that’s burrowed into the skin and caused an abscess. This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. I would have him seen by a Vet for oral antibiotics, pain medications and have the other anal gland checked. I hope this helps and I wish Jumanji a speedy recovery!

Mooshu needs to be examined by the veterinarian. A wound like this is generally an abscessed anal gland or a ruptured tumor. These lesions require care only a vet is generally able to provide. You need to stop Mooshu from licking the wound by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times because the licking may make it worse. Using a warm damp compress on the area will make her feel better and help keep the area draining. Keeping the open area clean is important also. After cleaning apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment to the area. If NIni is licking it then use a restraint collar to stop the licking. They now have soft collars and inflatable ones that are more comfortable than the plastic ones. If she stops eating and has a fever you should take her in for an exam and antibiotics. This should heal in a week or so. When you are able please have her anal sacs emptied to prevent this from happening again in the future. Is the wound next to the anus? This may be an infected anal sac. try to rinse it with iodine solution to get all the debris out. You will need to cover the wound, so flies will not lay eggs in it. If you keep the wound clean , then it should heal. Once there is no more pus or debris and it looks a healthy red, then do not wash it anymore and observe it, It should start healing.
