My dog's anal gland popped. How do I care for it and prevent issues?

Don't panic! Yes this will heal on its own. What I recommend you do is make a warm epsom salt solution and soak her little bum in the solution several times daily until the swelling goes down. She is small enough that you could put a 1/4 c of epsom salt in a kitchen sink-sized basin and have her sit in this until the water cools. This does a great job of healing the hole and drawing out the infection and swelling.

It usually takes about a week for an anal gland rupture to heal, but that assumes that the dog is on appropriate antibiotics and that the infection inside is clearing. If you're only seeing clear fluid and not pus, it sounds like the infection is getting better. You can apply warm compresses to the ruptured gland (wet a cloth and microwave it for 45 seconds or so until it's warm but not hot) for 5 minutes 3 times daily. It's actually not a bad thing that the hole doesn't close up too quickly, because it give the normal duct a chance to return to normal (the swelling to decrease) yet the gland will continue to drain.

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Hi there, It sounds like Chico may have a ruptured anal gland, the anal glands on each side of the anus, but when they become too full they can burst and cause what appears to be a wound on the side of the anus. I would recommend trying to apply a hot compress with a warm wash cloth to the area, and keeping it clean, but he should start antibiotics prescribed by your vet to fight the infection. If the abscess has already ruptured and you are able to warm compress the area, I would recommend allowing it to drain and do not feel that it needs any topical treatment. Abby should be discouraged from licking at the area as this will predispose her to developing a secondary infection. You could purchase an e-collar at a pet store or try using a t-shirt at home. After the holiday I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and relaying this information. They may recommend starting a short course of antibiotics at that time to help Abby heal quicker and prevent development of an infection. They can also consider pain medication at that time. Lobito is so cute! It sounds like he had an infected anal sac that opened up, and you did exactly the right thing by taking him into the vet. Antibiotics should help clear up the infection, and there is a chance the anal sac can heal on it's own. Without seeing it in person, I can't say for certain, but definitely keep an eye on it and if it doesn't appear to be healing over the next week, have him seen by a vet again as then surgery may be needed to close it completely.
