My dog has a wound under his tail. What home remedies can I use?

Hi there, It sounds like Chico may have a ruptured anal gland, the anal glands on each side of the anus, but when they become too full they can burst and cause what appears to be a wound on the side of the anus. I would recommend trying to apply a hot compress with a warm wash cloth to the area, and keeping it clean, but he should start antibiotics prescribed by your vet to fight the infection. Looks like an infection but I don't know what the underlying cause is. If he doesn't seem too bothered you can try applying this wound spray (you should be able to get it a your local Petco). Poor Tiger. Wash the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it.

Yes, you can soak his rear end in a warm water/epsom salt bath or make a compress with a small washcloth soaked in epsom salt water and hold this under his tail several times daily until she gets home. This will help the area to drain, decrease pain, and help it to heal faster. Good luck!

I cannot really see the injury well on this picture. This could be an infected anal gland which would have to be treated by a veterinarian. If it is just a scrape or a crack in the skin, you should shave the hair around it, flush it with a mild wound disinfectant and then apply some antibiotic ointment. If it does not heal in a week after doing this, your dog needs to be seen by your veterinarian for wound treatment.

Mooshu needs to be examined by the veterinarian. A wound like this is generally an abscessed anal gland or a ruptured tumor. These lesions require care only a vet is generally able to provide. You need to stop Mooshu from licking the wound by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times because the licking may make it worse. Poor Scarlet. If the wound is mild (the bleeding is stopping on its won, there is no muscle or deep tissue exposure, etc), you can apply pressure to stop the bleeding and clean the wound with saline rinse and apply triple antibiotic ointment. An E-collar or "cone" can prevent licking/biting and further trauma as the wound heals. However, if the bleeding does not stop on it's own, Scarlet appears to be in pain, or the wound is very deep, Scarlet should be seen by a vet right away, as she may need sutures, antibiotics, and pain medication.
