My 17lb dog was prescribed 10mg omeprazole. Is this dose too high?

While I think it is more common to prescribe omeprazole for once daily use there are reports of using it twice daily. If Lily has been on omeprazole once daily in the past it would be a good idea to check in with your vet to be sure that's the dose they intended.

Hi there. The published dosage range for fluoxetine (Prozac) in dogs is 0.5 - 2 mg/kg once daily. 60 mg is within this range, but this medication is normally given only once daily. Your veterinarian may have had a specific reason for choosing to prescribe it twice daily in Saber's case, so if you're concerned, I would recommend calling to discuss your questions with your vet. He/she should be able to explain why they chose this dosage for Saber, or may opt to reduce it if it was an oversight :)

However, in occasional cases, it can cause a loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. There is a chance that Spock may be feeling nauseous due to the omeprazole and is not eating due to nausea. Unfortunately, since I have not personally examined Spock, I am legally unable to provide you with precise dosing instructions and must instruct you to follow your vet's prescription. While we do not typically recommend Tums for dogs, you can safely give him some Prilosec (omeprazole), to help reduce acid secretion in the stomach and help him feel better. Prilosec generally comes in 20 mg tablets, so he could receive 40 mg orally twice daily. If the clinical signs persist beyond a day or so after trying the Prilosec, I recommend that he be seen by your veterinarian again, as a more serious problem could be present. I'm wondering if you mean omeprazole, as there is no drug that I am aware of called amorazole. Omeprazole is a prescription only medication for dogs, and you would need a prescription from a vet in order to get it, even when ordering it online. While there are online pet pharmacies, prescription meds require the vet sending in a prescription before sending it to you. I would speak to your vet about any medications Tilly may need, and they will prescribe them if necessary and appropriate. Unfortunately, it is illegal for the experts to prescribe any medications to our users. I hope this helps!
