My 75lb dog is on Prozac. Is 60mg twice daily too high a dose?

For an unrelated issue or to lessen anxiety to prevent more focal seizures? Typically Prozac (fluoxetine) is dosed at 0.5 to 0.9 mg per pound orally once per day. So for an 85 pound dog 40mg is actually a touch under the lowest part of the dosing range. First you need to understand why the Prozac was prescribed (for what condition) and then talk to your vet more in-depth about its use in Thor's case. I would not personally be concerned about using this low dose of Prozac in a dog with a history of only one focal seizure. Do not abruptly stop giving Prozac unless he has only been on it a few days. Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center with your question. Twenty mg of fluoxetine given once daily to a 47lb dog is within the recommended dose range, so yes it is safe. The trazadone dose is also within the recommended dose range when used in combination with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which is the classification of fluoxetine. There is n increased risk of developing a disorder called serotonin syndrome when these two drugs are used together, but the lower dose range of trazadone is used when they are given together to try to prevent that. The normal dose range of trazadone is higher than what Hank is currently being given. I hope this helps!

I suggest you talk to your vet about this. Her dose may need to be adjusted to a lower quantity. It sounds like she is having side effects. I suggest you drop the dose to 20mg once a day until you can speak to your vet. You cannot just stop this medication cold turkey. Based on the normal dose range of fluoxetine for dogs, your dog received less than double the recommended dose. Signs of overdose include lethargy and hyper salivation, while seizures can occur in dogs who have massive overdoses (this would not be considered a massive overdose). Because your dog has only taken a little over the highest recommended dose, he should be ok but you can take him into a vet to have vomiting induced to be safe. I never recommend doing it at home due to the risk of aspiration and the fact that hydrogen peroxide (which people commonly use at home to induce vomiting) can and does cause gastritis often worse than the initial problem. You can monitor him, and you do see any side effect, you can take him into the vet.

Cats metabolize drugs differently that humans, and therefore require a different dose of a drug than a human. I would not compare the dosage you used to take with what Kitty Kat has been prescribed to take. That being said, according to Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, the dose your vet prescribed is a little higher than listed, but because I can't see Kitty Kat in person, the vet likely has a valid reason to using a higher dose. I recommend speaking to your vet about the dose if you are concerned, it's ok to ask them questions.

The answer to this really depends on the dog. A lot of dogs are able to wean off the medication if the appropriate behavioral training and work has been done. I can understand you wanting to check on this. This medication is dosed out at 0.5-1mg/kg rounded to the nearest 10mg. So this dose is appropriate for your pet and isn't too much.
