Can I split my dog's 20mg delayed-release omeprazole pill for 5mg?

It is also ok if he punctures the capsule, though he may not like the taste. You can try pill pockets or using canned food to give the pill in if he can tolerate that. I hope this helps!

I can understand you wanting to check on this. This medication is dosed out at 0.5-1mg/kg rounded to the nearest 10mg. So this dose is appropriate for your pet and isn't too much. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cutting a pill into 1/5 has got to be very tricky even with a pill cutter! I would recommend consulting with Meg's veterinarian about getting her on a different medication that is easy to dose and doesn't require splitting the pill into small pieces. There are a variety of pain medications out there and available for arthritis that are much better and safer to use than paracetamol such as Rimadyl, Galliprant, or Previcox. I would ask your veterinarian if Meg could be transitioned over to a better alternative. I hope this helps!

I don't recommend breaking these pills in half. Due to the manufacturing process, we can't guarantee that the drug is evenly distributed in the pill. So by giving half, you could be giving all or none of the active ingredients. It would be best to have the appropriate prescription for Rose.

The omeprazole should not interfere with the other meds. You can also do the following: Fast Jack for 12 hours and then put him on bland food for a day, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly. Should this not help or should Jack get lethargic, or get diarrhea or vomiting, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on

While I think it is more common to prescribe omeprazole for once daily use there are reports of using it twice daily. If Lily has been on omeprazole once daily in the past it would be a good idea to check in with your vet to be sure that's the dose they intended.
