My dog's old broken leg hurts in winter. How to ease her pain outside?

Yes, it could be arthritis. Sometimes though cold can affect a formally broken bone. It's weird, but I broke my humerus about 12 years ago and sometimes when it's really cold, the arm hurts. That could be happening to Sophee. Until you get her into a vet, keep her as warm as possible. Take her out briefly to potty, and bring her right back in when she's done. Please do not give her any human pain medication, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Kloe probably has pain and stiffness from the surgery. Giving the pain medication as needed is good. Also massaging her leg to relax the muscles can help. Short frequent leash walks will keep her more comfortable and maintain the muscle support for her knee. In the photo I can see that Kloe would benefit from weight loss. Losing 10% of her body weight will reduce the strain on her knees and is equal to giving a full dose of medication for pain relief. It is important to keep her active with walking but minimize the running and jumping as often these dogs will develop problems in the other rear leg over time. You cannot give your dog human pain killers, the pain killers should be prescribed by your vet as these are dog specific pain killers. if the leg is broken it must at the very least be put in a splint, it will immobilize the leg, it will give it a chance to heal and will reduce the pain significantly.

If Lucy was prescribed pain medications by her vet, you can certainly use those. You can also apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel if you can locate where she is most tender. Other than that, keep her calm and encourage her to rest. If she isn’t feeling better in a day or two, it’s best to have her checked out by a vet.

Its possible that the leg may still be bothering Michael a little or it may be unrelated. I would recommend strict rest for the next 3 days (no walks, running or jumping), if he is still lame go ahead an take him to the vet. X-rays will likely be needed to see the quality of the bones. In the meantime, do not allow him to perform strenuous activities or jump off of furniture.
