Why is my dog groggy and not walking after surgery with no cast?

Since you did not mention what kind of surgery Diesel had, it is not possible to tell you whether the trouble getting up is caused by pain from the surgery, the surgery itself or due to the anesthesia or due to strong pain killers. The anesthesia should have worn off by now, However , strong pain killers can cause dogs to be groggy afterwards. You may need to help him to get up for a pee and having a bowel movement.

It's not normal but some dogs won't bear weight on the leg that they remember being hurt. Some dogs actually need some physical therapy in order to use the leg again. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about next steps and how to get Nico to use his leg again. I would also prevent any excessive licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar. The leg may be itchy and my need a bath (don't do this however without the OK from your vet). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Vinnie! Each dog and cat reacts differently to sedation and anesthesia. They feel goofy or strange and can react by pacing and panting. Since Vinnie is a large breed dog be sure that his belly isn't bloated. If he is trying to vomit then I would immediately take him to an emergency Vet. He could also be uncomfortable, if he is due for pain medications then I would give it to him. Try taking him for a quick walk outside then see if you can help him settle down in his bed. See if laying with or next to him helps his settle and sleep. His incision looks fine. I am very sorry to hear rhay Spock is not acting very energetic. I believe it could be because one of the following reasons; Spock could still be adjusting to the change in his life. The last couple of days have involved a surgery and a new home and family. All of this may take time for him to adjust to. He might feel slightly insecure and could benefit from some of the following techniques to help him adjust; Extra walks Extra interaction time - petting, and games Special meal of boneless boiled chicken breast and white rice It is possible that Spock is still in pain or that the surgery site is not healing well. Look for swelling, redness, heat, pain or discharge in the area. That would indicate infection. If you notice any of those signs, you believe that Spock is uncomfortable or not healing well take him into a veterinarian for a check-up. It's usually a good idea to have a new family pet addition examined by a veterinarian within the first month anyway. Best of luck with Spock!

Hello, thank you for your question. General anesthesia/sedation can take 18-24 hours to completely work it's way out of the pet's system. Fat Boy may still be quite sleepy and prefer to lie on the cough or bed for the rest of the evening tonight, but should be back to his normal self by tomorrow. If he is unrousable or taking short shallow breaths I would recommend having him rechecked by your veterinarian to ensure that he is not having a reaction to any of the medications that were used. Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Chestnut's care today! This could be related to being under anesthesia in one position which can result in pain in patients with arthritis for example. I think other possibilities for lameness should be considered. Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It depends quite a bit on what drugs and doses were used for anesthesia, so unfortunately it's difficult to give a good answer to this question without being able to look at his medical record. But in general, for most anesthetic procedures, it's not uncommon for many dogs to remain somewhat groggy or drowsy for up to 12 hours or so afterwards - my rule of thumb for owners at our clinic is that their pet should be acting normal again by the following morning, but not to worry overly much if they are a bit sleepy or "off" for the rest of the afternoon or evening after going home. However, the pet should be able to get up and walk around, eat and drink without problems, etc. - if they are groggy to the point of being unresponsive or unable to stand, this is not normal. If you are concerned about Falkor, the safest course of action would be to call your vet's office and describe how he is currently acting - they should be able to tell you if this is reasonable, based on their anesthesia protocol. If he is unresponsive, having difficulty swallowing, or seems to be getting worse over time, I would take him back to your vet or your nearest emergency clinic to be checked.
