Why is my dog not eating, weak, and her third eyelid is showing?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed

Hi. My dog dosent eat or drink.Been 5 days since. She lost weight, shes weak and cant walk much. Also her third eyelid cover almost half of her eyes and has tearing. No other symptoms. I checked her mouth for a foreign object but nothing. She dont have any injuries. Today i gave her some water with a syringe. Before she was just fine, never had health problems, had a normal weight and out of sudden this happen. She is 10 years old, metis, large dog. Thank you!

Bety sounds sick and should see a Vet. Not eating for 4-5 days can mean a lot of things. The raised third eyelids could mean her eyes hurt. A common reason for a dogs eyes to hurt and also not feel well is uveitis. The phrase the “eyes are the windows to the soul” applies here as uveitis can be a symptom of or secondary to systemic disease.

Because Bety is intact and not spayed an infected uterus (pyometra) is a very valid concern and is life threatening. She could have a tick borne disease, leptospirosis, cancer, kidney or liver disease or a fever from many other causes.

My dog is thin, weak, not eating, and has eye issues. What's wrong?

It sounds like she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause of her problems. It is very concerning that she is thin and weak and your vet can run some lab-work to screen for kidney disease, liver disease, endocrine diseases, etc. Your vet can also take x-rays, if needed, to look for any abnormalities that would cause decreased appetite and weight loss. She could also have a problem with her teeth and your vet can do a dental evaluation. She may need an antibiotic to treat a conjunctivitis. Please call a vet and schedule a check up.

My dog is lethargic, won't eat, and has eye discharge. What's wrong?

Hi there. So sorry that Sara is not feeling well. Her symptoms are not specific for any one illness or disease process so it is hard for me to speculate as to what may be wrong. I can tell you however, that she is sick and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian for an examination. I am a bit worried that she could have a uterine infection since she is not spayed. If she is not up to date on her vaccinations she may have caught a viral disease like parvo or distemper. Those are just a few things that come to mind right away that might be going on. The bottom line is that she is ill and my suggestion is that you get her to your vet ASAP for an examination. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog has a fever, is lethargic, and weak. Should I see a vet?

Betty sounds very sick at the moment, and based on her symptoms, she should see a vet immediately. Without seeing her in person, I can't say what's causing her fever, lethargy, weakness, and lack of appetite, but she could have a systemic illness or infection causing it. Yes, I would be worried. First thought of what could be wrong in a dog that is not spayed is a uterine infection (pyometra). This could be life-threatening. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. This is not normal behavior and her symptoms are not specific for any one illness or disease process. It may some testing to get it figured out.
