My dog is lethargic, won't eat, and has eye discharge. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old

My dog stays in my bed all day, refuses to eat normal dog food(we have to give her human food if we want her to eat), and sometimes there is a mucus like fluid discharge from her eyes. I’m concerned something is wrong. What’s your advice?

Hi there. So sorry that Sara is not feeling well.

Her symptoms are not specific for any one illness or disease process so it is hard for me to speculate as to what may be wrong. I can tell you however, that she is sick and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian for an examination. I am a bit worried that she could have a uterine infection since she is not spayed. If she is not up to date on her vaccinations she may have caught a viral disease like parvo or distemper. Those are just a few things that come to mind right away that might be going on.

The bottom line is that she is ill and my suggestion is that you get her to your vet ASAP for an examination. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

With the symptoms you are describing, I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having her blood tested to see if there are any systemic changes. She may be fighting an infection and may need a course of an antibiotic which the vet can provide you with. It sounds as Chuey is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Yes, I would be worried. First thought of what could be wrong in a dog that is not spayed is a uterine infection (pyometra). This could be life-threatening. The discharge from the eye may be related to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis (even though a picture of it would be necessary to give you more specific answers). Inappetence is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. Why is my dog lethargic with a dry nose and clear discharge?

Your pet needs to be seen by a vet right away. Even with no other symptoms, extreme lethargy is very concerning. Your dog may have eaten something that disagreed with her, swallowed something that has caused an obstruction, has parasites, is coming down with some kind of infection, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam and labwork to determine the cause of your pets symptoms and give you some treatment options based on those results.

Poor Pookie! It definitely sounds like something is wrong. These symptoms could certainly be caused by distemper, but could also be due to many other illnesses, so it's not possible to say what's wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

Those symptoms are very vague and could be attributed to almost any illness or disease process. You should take her to a vet for an exam if at all possible. She could have an upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, a virus (like distemper) or so many other possibilities. It is best to get a diagnosis from the vet and then treat her accordingly.

If there is a veterinarian on your area, she needs to be seen. She could be suffering an infectious disease such a viral, bacterial or parasitic infection. Is there any chance she ate something she shouldn't have such as a rock, piece of a toy or a piece of clothing, etc? She will likely require some fluids as I worry she is dehydrated.
