Is it normal for my dog to be weak, falling, and not eating after seizures?

Hello, Yes, it can be normal for dogs to experience a change in behavior and attitude for a few days before and after a seizure. I'm sorry that Layla is having seizures. Lethargy, stumbling, excessive sleepiness and decreased appetite can all be caused by seizure activity. The brain undergoes an enormous amount of electrical stimulation during a seizure and can take a while to recover. If by the morning she's not improving, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian for evaluation. They may recommend blood work to look for possible underlying causes of the seizures. It's possible that the seizures are due to a brain tumor, which is very likely due to his age. this means his condition will deteriorate regardless of the treatment, sometimes the deterioration takes several months and sometimes it's a matter of days.

That's a great question and one we do not have a lot of information to provide a definitive answer. It is actually uncommon for owners to report a pre-ictal phase. In the rare cases that do, typically it is head twitching lasting less than a minute prior to octal period. Now the post-ictal period can last from hours to days (up to 72 hours in my experience). In your pet's case, it may be that she has a prolonged post-ictal phase and then begins to seizure. If your pet began having seizures after the age of 7 years, then it is less likely she has idiopathic epilepsy or liver disease (though hepatic encephalopathy must be ruled out). Patients that have late onset seizures (>7y) are most likely to have intracranial disease such as an inflammatory condition or tumor. I would advise you to document the episodes and consult your veterinarian to discuss diagnostic tests and treatment.

I am so sorry Jasper has seizures and is acting strange. It sounds like he may be in the "post ictal" phase, which occurs after a seizure when they can act confused and abnormal. It is also possible he is having mini seizures still that are causing his change in behavior. I would recommend you take Jasper to your vet as soon as possible to be evaluated and possibly treated. He likely needs to have blood work done to see if there is any underlying abnormalities that could be contributing or causing these problems. He also likely needs to be started on anti-seizure medication to decrease the frequency and even hopefully eliminate these seizures. His lack of appetite may be linked to the seizure episodes or of course it could be due to many other things such as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, among many other possibilities. I wonder if these two events are potentially the post ictal phase of seizures. A grand mal seizure is characterized by loss of consciousness and convulsions, but the active phase can be quite short. There is then a recovery period called the post ictal phase where the dog is disoriented, can act aggressive or clingy, can pant heavily, or have trouble walking. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian especially if Tullamore is still walking abnormally. Low blood sugar, anemia or liver disease can cause similar signs but usually they would be persistent.
