My chihuahua's nose is bleeding. What's causing it and what to do?

I would recommend trying to limit Saml ability to dig and root in the blankets while her nose heals. Typically applying any topical medications to a lesion such as this can cause them to try to rub it more, exacerbating the problem. Keep her nose clean and dry, using a warm, damp washcloth if needed to clean it. Maybe for a few days try to limit her access to the blankets or remove any toys or treats she likes to "bury".

Hello, sorry to hear about Kyro. Dogs with bleeding from the nose could be from different causes. Yes trauma is an option but it sounds like you did. It witness any trauma immediately before the bleeding started. So it sounds like that may not be the cause. An infection or even inflammation can indeed be cause. Other causes such as a foreign object stuck in his nose can also be likely in dogs. And finally a clotting disorder. If you see any persistent bleeding or bruising in he belly or gums then I would be most concerned with a clotting disorder and you should have you dog evaluated immediately. Otherwise, continue the antibiotic that was prescribed and have him evaluated at your best convinience. Hope this helps and best of luck.

A nose bleed could be due to a clotting disorder, high blood pressure, a nasal infection or a nasal tumor. A tooth root abscess could also cause a nose bleed, and I could see how a tooth root abscess might bleed mainly during eating. Any of the other diseases would still be possible as well. Unfortunately I don’t think there is anything specific to do to prevent the nosebleeds from occurring without addressing the underlying cause. You should keep Pirate quiet and calm and could try elevating his food.

At 13 years of age, a nasal tumor would be most likely. A tumor typically would cause bleeding out of just one nostril. Other possibilities would be a severe bacterial infection, tooth root abscess, nasal foreign material (I've seen dogs that had toy stuffing in the nose), or fungal infection. Unfortunately anesthesia for nasal scoping and often CT scan is usually necessary to get a diagnosis.

Nose bleeds can occur as a result of trauma, significant rhinitis or inflammation of the nose, high blood pressure, rat poison ingestion, a problem with blood clotting, and/or a possible cancerous cause. How to treat it depends on what the underlying cause is. Koeby should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine what the underlying cause is. Dogs can lose a significant amount of blood from their noses and become anemic. There is no at home treatment that is sufficient. I hope this is helpful!

Without knowing his age isn't hard to give you an idea of what could be going on. It could be anything from cancer to an infection to something stuck in his nose. It could be Gus Gus has a foreign body, growth, or fungal infection in his nose causing the bleeding. A fever means that he could have an infection going on. He needs to see a vet now, as he sounds quite sick with all of his symptoms. Please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.
