My dog's nose bleeds when eating. How can I stop it before the vet?

Nose bleeds can occur as a result of trauma, significant rhinitis or inflammation of the nose, high blood pressure, rat poison ingestion, a problem with blood clotting, and/or a possible cancerous cause. How to treat it depends on what the underlying cause is. Koeby should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine what the underlying cause is. At 13 years of age, a nasal tumor would be most likely. A tumor typically would cause bleeding out of just one nostril. Other possibilities would be a severe bacterial infection, tooth root abscess, nasal foreign material (I've seen dogs that had toy stuffing in the nose), or fungal infection. Unfortunately anesthesia for nasal scoping and often CT scan is usually necessary to get a diagnosis.

Oh no. Poor Brandy. She likely has a bleeding disorder or some kind of trauma to her nose. You should definitely take her in to your vet to have her blood tested for a coagulation disorder. She may need special medicaiton to allow her blood to clot properly. At the very least the vet can replenish her fluid loss and get her on Vitamin K to promote coagulation and help stop her bleeding. Lexus really needs to go see a vet as soon as possible. A long term nose bleed is a medical emergency. My main concerns would be exposure to toxin that might affect his ability to clot his blood. This could be rat poison or another toxin. However a foreign object up his nose, trauma and infection can cause bleeding too. He needs to have blood work to detect if he is clotting his blood and make sure his platelet number is normal. If he will let you apply pressure to his nose and maybe even ice to the bride of the nose to slow the bleeding until you get him into a vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Kyro. Dogs with bleeding from the nose could be from different causes. Yes trauma is an option but it sounds like you did. It witness any trauma immediately before the bleeding started. So it sounds like that may not be the cause. An infection or even inflammation can indeed be cause. Other causes such as a foreign object stuck in his nose can also be likely in dogs. And finally a clotting disorder. If you see any persistent bleeding or bruising in he belly or gums then I would be most concerned with a clotting disorder and you should have you dog evaluated immediately.
