My dog can't see at night. What causes dog night blindness?

A typical disease that would cause night blindness is retinal degeneration (PRA). Night blindness would be an early sign as the disease affects the rods responsible for night time vision first. This is a genetic disease that can appear from the age of one on. Another disease causing this would be SARDS, sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome. Night blindness is unusual but it can develop. Sometimes this is hereditary but other causes like nutritional imbalance or a retinol disease could also be the cause. Dogs can develop blindness secondary to disease of the brain (central), eye (peripheral) or secondary to systemic disease such as elevated blood pressure or Cushing's disease. If she is able to see now, she may not have been truly blind before or just had trouble seeing at night. A full examination would be needed to help to determine the underlying cause. In the meantime, observe her closely and make notes including changes in behavior, bumping into things, changes in eyes, changes in urination or defecation, appetite and take this information with you to your veterinary appointment.

Sadly, many of the ailments of human senior citizens can also occur in our canine companions. Impaired vision or blindness can occur in dogs and can be due to things like cataracts, glaucoma, etc. The good news is that these diseases, if caught early enough, can be treated and sometimes even reversed or cured! My best advice is to take Baby to your local veterinarian as soon as possible to have a complete ophthalmic examination performed. This is a medical emergency, and Pirata needs to see a vet right away. He could have suffered a seizure that has left him completely blind, he could have progressive retinal atrophy, or he could have diabetes causing the blindness. He needs to see a vet now in order to have the best chance of having his sight restored. Please bring him into a vet now.

It is hard to say what the cause it of the total blindness is without examining Ann first and doing an eye exam on her. Ann may have genetic or congenital disorder of the eye(s) that is causing the blindness, especially if she was blind in one eye already at a young age. If the eye was directly exposed to bleach (bleach on the eye causing a chemical burn of the eye), that could cause blindness. While fumes from bleach can be irritating to the eye, it is unlikely the fumes from the bleach would have caused blindness. I would strongly encourage that Ann see her veterinarian soon to confirm the blindness in the eyes with an ocular exam. After an eye exam and physical exam are done, causes of the blindness can be determined and diagnosed with your veterinarian. I hope this has helped and best of luck to you and Ann.
