My dog barks at me at night in the dark. Can dogs see in the dark?

As a general rule, dogs will be able to smell and hear much better than we can at all times, and at night, they can see much better because of the way their eyes are made. Consequently, it is likely either a person (could be pretty far off) or, more likely, a wild animal is entering Rusty's field of senses in one way or another. The challenging part, once you know what he is barking at, will be to redirect his attention because, to him, he is protecting his pack/territory. This carries a strong instinct-driven behavior that requires a lot of time and diligence to correct if you want him to stop. I would encourage you to make sure of what he is focusing on if you can, then try to desensitize him to whatever that is. Hope this helps!

She is so young I wouldn't expect her to go blind, although it can happen. But because of this symptom I would bring her to a veterinarian to make sure they evaluate her eyes. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and your pups in person to really take care of this behavior. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This would be considered some type of anxiety which you could say it is separation anxiety specifically. This is not uncommon actually. I would recommend you discourage this behavior as much as possible. You can try doing positive reinforcement which basically means to praise and reward him with treats when he does the desired behavior which is staying quiet when locked in cage. Persistence is really the key to success. Eventually they can do great. Good luck!

If the problem is truly behavioral and she has no other issues going on (I know you say she had a biopsy recently) you can explain this to your doctor and likely they will prescribe you something for anxiety-especially if she is calmed by hugging tight, etc. thunder shirts are available and many animals find them calming as well (the "shirt" fits snugly over the animal and sort of mimics a hug). Anxiolytics like trazadone often help-but so can natural medications like melatonin in my experience. Your doctor will decide which is right for your pet based on her current history and health status. I hope this helps!
