Is my 4-year-old cat going blind? He struggles to see at night.

I would recommend seeing a veterinarian who can examine Zaboo's eyes. Some of the more common causes of vision loss in an older cat include high blood pressure affecting the retina, infectious diseases, and cancer. The supplement you are referring to could be taurine which is an amino acid that cats need in their diets and can cause blindness and vision loss if deficient. If Zaboo eats commercial cat food, taurine deficiency would be extremely unlikely since all cat foods are required to have enough taurine.

Hello. There can be a number of causes for night blindness including exposure to toxins & some drugs, primary eye disease & some heritable conditions such as PRA ( Progressive Retinal Atrophy). It is important to have a thorough eye exam done to rule out all possible retinopathies. This would include an examination of menace responses, corneal exam, fundic exam & possible electroretinogram. It may not be his time yet but he does need to be examined by the veterinarian today. The disorientation and potential blindness is concerning for low blood sugar, hypertension, a brain tumor and a few other conditions. Some of these conditions respond very well to treatment and some don't but first, you must know what is happening so you know the treatment options. I would guess that Ebony may have had retinal detachment secondary to high blood pressure. Kidney disease can cause increased blood pressure. If her retinas partially reattached she may have regained some vision.

Retinal degeneration can result in blindness and therefore a lack or reduced response to all of the visual reflexes. By its nature - the degenerated retina is abnormal and would appear abnormal on a specialist eye exam by the time the patient had become blind

A typical disease that would cause night blindness is retinal degeneration (PRA). Night blindness would be an early sign as the disease affects the rods responsible for night time vision first. This is a genetic disease that can appear from the age of one on. Another disease causing this would be SARDS, sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome. If Socks is bumping into thing he might have lost his sight. I could be due to an eye problem but in old cat that could be cause by an increased blood pressure (sometime secondary to a kidney disease). If possible I would have Socks checked by your veterinarian (physical examination, eye check, blood pressure check and if needed basic bloods and urinary test).
