My puppy's neck is tilted after a fall. Is it broken? What to do?

I am so sorry this has happened! Puppies are very fragile, so if you suspect a head or neck injury, its best to have him seen immediately. Even if it isnt an injury, a sudden change in behavior can indicate something serious, as well. I certainly hope this helps.

I am so sorry! If the dog is unconscious there is a good chance there has been fatal injuries and without medical attention nothing can be done. If you cannot take him to a vet, I would just keep him quiet and still. You can try to support him by syringe feeding him food and water to ensure he gets nutrition. Do not give him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. You can ice the area for 10 minutes three times per day for a couple of days then use a warm compress if he is doing better. If there is an open wound you can put Neosporin on it twice a day and try not to let him scratch at it. Just know without medical attention he may pass away on his own if the injuries are severe. Without me seeing it, there isn't much I can advise. There isn't any good home remedies for severe neck or spinal injuries. I am sorry and I hope he starts to feel better!

yes, any possible head/neck injury is always concerning and non weight bearing lameness combined with the poor balance causing him to fall over are all red flags for a possible serious fracture. Please have him fully assessed buy a vet urgently, it is possible he will require xrays to rule out broken bones

If the pup is nursing and acting normal he should be fine. Puppies are very flexible and usually heal quickly with injuries. If he's not eating or acting different from the rest then he may have a more serious injury. Your veterinarian will examine the pup and may give an anti inflammatory injection to reduce the swelling especially if there is a neurological problem. In the meantime you can put a cold pack on the area to reduce the swelling. There is not much else to do. Even if it seems bad as long as you keep the pup fed and warm he should improve with minimal treatment. It is quite possible he has suffered a head or high spinal injury but a 'broken neck' is unlikely given the fact he is mobile and able to move. The clear blood results are positive and although an MRI or CT scan may provide additional information, if he is eating, mobile and able to toilet normally then rest and TLC may be enough to promote recovery. Hills make a specialist b/d diet may help with brain and neurological health and speed recovery, acupuncture may also be worth considering

I'm worried that Ivy has hurt her neck from being scruffed. This could be something like the skin got pulled away from the underlying soft tissue or it could be related to an injury to the vertebra or discs. Unfortunately, that's hard to know since Ivy can't talk. I recommend to have Ivy examined today. Not being able to lift her head indicates a lot of pain or even nerve damage. The vet will need to conduct a physical exam to begin figuring things out. The vet likely has COVID protocols in place so call ahead and find out when they want you to arrive. You will need to follow their instructions. Until Ivy is examined by the veterinarian, she needs STRICT rest so no walks, running, jumping, plying or stairs. Crate rest is best. A warm (not hot) compress applied for 5 minutes every 2 hours may also help. be very gentle when handling her. I hope this helps.

Ouch, poor Harper! Unfortunately, there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs (including aspirin). Try to restrict Harper to a crate or a small room with no furniture for the next week or so to prevent further injury to her neck. Only take her on a harness for a short trip outside to eliminate, but avoid a neck collar. I understand your financial constraints, but Harper really should be examined by a vet to make sure she has not sustained more severe injuries to her neck that are causing neurologic deficits. Some SPCAs or rescues have low cost veterinary clinics available. Care Credit (carecredit.com) can provide a financing option for veterinary costs. There are some non-profit groups (redrover.org is one example) that will also provide financial assistance for veterinary care if costs are a concern.
