My dog has a neck lump from edema. When will the swelling go down?

This is not unusual. Your dog had an edema, which is a collection of fluid in the tissue. Gravity makes the fluid "drop" towards the ground, so it moved to the neck. This is not anything to worry about. It will take a few days to be reabsorbed by the body. If the swelling gets very warm or painful, take MJ back to the vet. If it stays "cool" (the same temperature as the skin around it) and the skin does not turn red and is not painful, you can just wait it out.

You can try a warm compress every 6-8 hours to see if that helps the swelling decrease. It may be from an insect sting or bite. If it doesn't resolve in a couple of days or gets worse I recommend taking Maisy to the vet to make sure something more serious isn't causing the swelling.

Hello. A mass as you are describing could be from a bug bite, and if so the swelling should go away in about 48 hours. If the swelling continues past that time then I would be worried about an abscess/cyst/tumor. If it isn't painful or bothering her, and it continues to get smaller then you can monitor it, however if it doesn't go away, gets bigger, gets hard, or becomes painful, then I would recommend you have it seen and tested with a "Fine needle aspirate". It certainly is possible to see swellings at injection sites, but 2.5 weeks later is a longer period of time than we will commonly see before a swelling will appear. If there is any possibility that Emmett was bit or injured at that location, I would certainly be worried that it could be an infection at that site (despite the antibiotics). If the swelling is getting larger, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it. If it is a swelling from one of the injections, it should gradually get smaller and should not be painful. Many injections can cause temporary lumps which are generally painless and resolve over 4-6weeks. If there is any discomfort or heat in the area or it does not reduce over time you should have it checked by your vet to rule out more sinister causes

Poor girl. This almost looks like an insect bite. Since it isn't bothering her, you can opt to just monitor this area for the next 1-2 weeks to see if it spontaneously regresses (resolves on its own). In the meantime you can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water daily to keep it from getting infected. It sounds as though your vet initially suspected an infection causing the swelling around Lexi's neck. There can be some very minimal fluctuation in the prominence of the salivary glands and lymph nodes that are located under the neck, which can certainly occur with infections. However, other conditions can also cause swelling in these areas. Puppy strangles (also called juvenile cellulitis) is an autoimmune condition that can cause some pretty prominent swellings around the neck. Given Lexi's age, this would be my first suspicion. Other issues, including lymphoma or a salivary mucocele, are always possible, although they'd be highly unlikely in such a young puppy. At this point, I think your next step is to take Lexi back to her vet for a follow up visit. Your vet will likely want to run some diagnostic testing on this swelling or even some baseline blood work to check her blood cell counts and organ function. Depending on their findings, they may prescribe steroids to help treat puppy strangles or another medication to treat a different condition. I hope that everything goes well!
